what to do about a broken voice?

One of my good friends is a radio show host and she has lost her voice. She has gotten it back somewhat but its still very raspy and she hasn't bee allowed back on the air for over a week now. Overall she has been sick for 2.5 weeks!

It started with a very sore thoat, chills etc. Then turned to a cough but not bronchitis, more of a throating larangytis cough - but one where she would wake up in the middle of the night choking on her phlem (sorry tmi). The cough is gone and she's been to the dr twice, got sterioids, has taken tons of cold medicine, tea, breathing in steam and trying to rest her voice but she is just not back to normal....has this happened to anyone and what did u do?

Thx!

Sometimes laryngitis can last long. Has she had x-rays done? This sounds like something a friend of mine went through and after an x-ray she found out she had something called a nodule pressing on her vocal cords. If she has been x-rayed then I would suggest she keep doing what she is doing. Also, when my throat would act up my vocal teacher would tell me to gargle with a teaspoon of karo syrup in warm water. It used to help a lot. I hope she gets better real soon.

She can go to a health food store (or even Whole Foods) and get anything containing Slippery Elm Root. She can get the straight up tea, or she can get the throat drops by Thayer. They work miracles. Whenever I blew out my voice singing, that always did the trick.

she should also not:
eat any salty food
eat any spicy food
no caffeine
cough
cry (like with sobbing)

these are the Thayers drops: Not sure where on LI she is, but any Whole Foods will carry them or Sherry's in Babylon, or most health food stores. Maybe even GNC. Last option is to buy 'Throat Coat tea' by Traditional Medicinals. They have it at most supermarkets. It has slippery elm, but very little. You need to drink a lot o fit.

I have vocal chord nodules and as a music teacher it is very difficult. I never went for x rays though. I went to an ENT and they did a test called a laryngoscopy. It uses a small camera that they stick up your nose and down the throat. The go right intothe voice box to see what is happening. I would def recommend her going for this. I have a few ENTs so if you need recommendations let me know! good uck!

This is what my voice teacher used to prescribe:

1) Fisherman's friends
2) steam
3) Honey
4) Elm Bark Lozenges (an Opera Singers BEST friend, trust me)
