What to do with a husband who is a pack-rat?

What to do with a husband who is a pack-rat?

I am going to scream. My DH keeps every piece of junk imaginable. We moved into this apartment in July and he still has stuff in the second bedroom that he did not unpack. I think he thinks that room is his storage area, which it is not. I went through a lot of the stuff and it is junk, keys, old papers, I even found an electrial socket. I asked him what it was for and he says to me, 'You never know when you might need one.' I want to just get rid of all this junk.

Does anyone else have a husband who is a pack-rat?

He has over 100 video tapes that are not labeled and each month, I throw out anywhere from 5-10 and he has not noticed yet!

Just venting

mine is a semi pack rat as well... there are still boxes in his closet and we moved here over 3 years ago! I do like you with the videotapes, every week i try to sneak into his closet and/or drawers and toss a few unneeded items out. He keeps socks with holes in them! it drives me nuts. then he'll complain he has no socks... duh how can i tell when it looks like your drawer is full of 'em? LOL.

DH isn't a pack rat but I won't let him get that way. Sometimes he wants to keep stuff with the 'what if...' idea but I'm not into that b/c stuff builds up and you may never use it!

My advice would be to set up a day and go through stuff together sorting and throwing out/donating. I think it is better to work together and have you DH learn to keep what is needed or is likely to be used in the future and get rid of things he won't be likely to use or keep too many things with sentimental value (keep some but realize he always has the memories!).

GOOD LUCK! IMHO start this now so later in life you don't have piles of junk all over your home and so he doesn't pass this on to your kids (if you have/plan on having them).

As you can probably tell, I'm a stickler for organization!

My husband has at least 4 boxes of college physics books - and he does nothing with physics now! Yet, he complains because I have too many kitchen items or too much clothes. At least I use these kitchen items to make him scrumptious meals and I wear all these clothes. He keeps his physics books so they can collect dust!!! And I won't even get into all the stereo equipment and computer crap he keeps on buying off e-bay!!!

Oh my!!!! I think my husband would win the prize! He throws nothing and I mean nothing at all away. He has lived in the same house his entire life and has just about everything either he or his parents have ever owned. When I first met him the disaster in his house was so bad that I almost gave up on him. Even after more than 7 years of my throwing or giving things away, you can barely walk through our basement. There are boxes up to the ceiling in just about every area of the basement. Let's not even get me started on the garage. Ughhhh!!!!!! All I can suggest is patience. Good luck!

Can I join your club? I have tried to get him to throw some stuff out. I told him by the this summer I want two full boxes in the attic gone.
We even have a piece of bleechers from his college stadium!

Michelle..........
When we first started dating, he had a lamp from college shaped from a beer bottle. When we moved in together, I told him he had to get rid of it.

He also has a storage unit at his old place. He has 4000 yes I said 4000 comic books there, a washing machine, old furniture and the one thing that I wanted him to keep, he threw out which was his grandmothers china. UGH-MEN!

My husband is the same way!
I just throw everything away that is not put away, yes. it's harsh...but I can't deal with junk everywhere (my mother is the same way, so I grew up with constantly trying to organize her stuff!)
