Im home alone and a man just came to my door saying he needed to get in to my garage to read the gas meter. Well, my garage is connected to my house, the guy is in plain clothes, how do i know hes not going to kill me?! So i told him no and that DH would call in the reading . Is that being paranoid or just being cautious?
ETA - he kinda gave me an attitude when i said no but whatever!

Not at all...I would of done the same exact thing...I used to do that when I used to live with my parents also...there are crazy people out, better safe then sorry.

I don't care if it is being paranoid, I'd do the exact same thing! You were smart and SAFE!!!!!
They warn about this stuff all the time on the news so good for you for keeping yourself safe.

I did that once when we first moved in and it ended up being my neighbor knocking at the door. He totally knew i was home and just thought i was a weirdo!

I would have done the same thing. Unless the person was dressed from head to toe in the electric company uniform with a service vehicle outside AND I knew that they were coming I would not let them in.

You did the right thing. Better safe than sorry. Maybe you should call the electric company and ask them if someone has been dispatched to your area for readings, and if they are in the habit of sending workers in plain clothes.

He shouldnt be wearing plains clothes! He shouldnt be reading your meter from your garage!! He shouldnt be giving you an attitude if you said no.

I live in a two story apartment house and the meter is down in the basement with no attachment to my house so they have no reason to even knock on my door. If I lived in a house Im not sure what I would have done. Did he have that big bulky meter on him?

I wouldnt have even answered the door!
Was he on foot or in a van? Have they ever come before? That is weird! Usually the gas meters are on the side of the house and they are usually dressed in uniform. Why dont you call the company and ask about this.

NO! I don't even answer the door when DH isn't home. Call me paranoid but at least I'm alive and paranoid. I took a class on murder and let me tell you, these people get creative.

I would want to call the company just to find out if it was someone from the company or not. If it was, I would complain that he was in plain clothes and didn't have any logos on him so you didn't even let him in the house. If they said no one came out, maybe you should just call the police and make a report??? Maybe there were other complaints?

Yeah you would think the meter would be on the outside of the house. He was on foot cuase i looked for a utility truck but didnt see one. I couldnt tell what he was wearing under his coat but his coat was just plain- nothing to do with the gas company. He was carrying that big bulky meter thing but i feel like anyone could steal one of those right? Well, im glad i didnt let him in- thanks ladies.

You did the right thing and I would do the same.
When I was 14 I got off the bus from school and there was a man in my house who said he was going to work on the oil burner. He said he had let him self in. No one was home which was weird, so I run up stairs and let the dogs out and ran out of the house. They guy was so scared of the dogs he locked himself in our boiler room. I called the cops and screamed like I was being murdered. I didn't know who he was and he was in unlabled truck. He did turn out to be a man from the oil company but I've always been scared of someone trying to attack me.
My brother makes fun of me but I had a deadbolt lock on my door plus a chain lock. I don't care, its peace of mind for me.
