What would you do in this situation? (a bit long)

What would you do in this situation? (a bit long)

DH bought my engagement ring from Zales.

I brought my ring in two weeks ago to be cleaned and a stone came out during the process. So I waited a week for it to be fixed. A jeweler comes ones a week.

When I went to pick it up, I was appalled with the way the band looked. A small side stone fell out (channel set) and the surrounding metal was all scracthed and looked totally messed up!!

I told them I would not accept it and they said they would give it to the jeweler to be rebuffed and dipped again. So another week goes by.....

I pick it up today and although better, it still looks messed up! Not the most noticable imperfection but it is not the way I gave it to them

So they said I can get a brand new ring if I don't want this one.

Here's the the thing, I am a bit sentimental about THIS ring. I know I will get the exact same ring back. but still.

Then DH suggested upgrading the ring to bigger stone since I am not getting my original back.

I don't know what to do. I am so upset.

What would you do?

Accept it the way it is.

Get a brand new ring.

Upgrade the same style ring to a bigger middle stone.

Thanks

So Sorry Jenn, for what you are going through.
It sounds like the staff at Zales Really Messed Up.

You should be Compensated, but I Totally Understand how you are Feeling. It is Very Sentimental. I know that.

Wish there was a Way you could keep you Ring, but still get a New One. They are the ones that Messed up. You brought it there for a Cleaning, & you got it back it a Bad Condition.

Is there a way you can Really Be Compensated???

So Sorry Sweetie.

I'm so sorry to hear that they damaged your ring like that! It's good that they are going to compensate you for it, but that really is a tough decision. After they re-dipped it/buffed it, etc., is it just like light scratches now? If you decided to keep your ring, would they still give you some sort of compensation? Sorry that this happened

That's what I would want to be able to Keep My Ring, but still get a New One. They were the Ones that Damaged your Ring.

Good Luck

MHO is I would have them replace the band/ring itself, I would not have them change the center stone. that is just me, Im sentimental about my ring too and I think in the situation I would rather have it look like it did then change anything about it.

Scratches on metal shouldn't be that hard to fix.

I'd go with getting a second opinion....from an independent jewler. It may cost more, but if you really want to keep your own ring...

Thanks ladies. It actually is more than scratches. It looks like the metal opening where the diamond is inserted to all jagged too.

it sort of looks like someone through crazy glue on it and it dried.

Ia m still waiting to hear back to see if another jeweler can fix the problem.

Thanks for the hugs ladies!!!!

I'm so sorry that you are having to deal with this!!! DEF not right by any means!! No one can tell you what to do in this siyuation!! Me personally would want to keep my original ring (I'm also very sentimental) BUT I would insist they reimburse me in someway!! Even if that means a pretty new bracelet or something!!!

This is really terrible, they definitely messed up!!! Jenn I'd probably start by finding an expert jewelry repair place to fix it, get an estimate in writing, bring that to Zales and get their agreement that they'll reimburse you. I'd 100% want to keep my ring, if there was any way possible?
Hope it gets sorted out sweetie, thats a REALLy bad commentary on their repairs though...

Wow, the SAME THING happened to me, only it was with my wedding band!! About 6 weeks after our wedding I noticed a diamond was missing from my band (there are 5 diamonds in it). I brought the band back to Zales to be fixed. A week later, I retrieved the band and it looked HORRIBLE. One of the last diamonds in the band (not the one that fell out) was COMPLETELY sideways and the prongs holding in the diamond were squished close together. I took one look a the ring and told the guy who was working that were was no way in hell I would accept the ring. He looked at it and was surprised too and said that I shouldn't accept it. He told me to come back in a week. I went back to pick it up, the diamond was flat (not sideways) again but the prongs are all screwed up. I told them I was extrememly unhappy with their work and would never return to their store.

Bottom line is they have pretty stuff but their jewelers are terrible.

It's a tough decision to make. I didn't want a new band because this was the band that I was married in and I didn't want to lose that. I'm not sure how I would feel had it been my engagment ring.

Good luck and stay away from Zales when you go shopping for your wedding band!!!

First off, I'm sorry. I agree with a prior post...Get an estimate from another jeweler and ask Zales to reimburse youf or that amount. You shouldn't have to compromise on YOUR ring. Good luck!

While we're at it, thought I'd share my bad experience with Zales as well. My ering is actually a bridal set. A few days before the wedding, we pulled the band out and took both rings to Zales in Massapequa Mall to be cleaned and inspected. Picked them up and I later notice there is a line on the back of the wedding band. It was there from when they originally sized it, but I figured they inspected it and didn't say anything about it, so it should be fine, right? Wrong. I was at work one day and took my ring off to put lotion on. I noticed the line turned into a CRACK! DH ran both rings right over to the Roosevelt Field Mall store since that's where he bought it and feels more comfortable. He wanted to make sure the ering was fine. They kept both rings because they said there was also a hairline crack in the ering. Both rings were repaired flawlessly, but I was amazed that the staff who 'inspected' my ring didn't pick up on it.

Hmm i guess Im not that sentimental which is weird becasuse I save EVERYTHING; cards, pictures, wrapeprs..ULTIMATE pack rat. YET if the ring is badly damged, I am practical I guess. I would just get a new band if its going to be identical and if he wants to upgrade your stone, I would allow it. I understand the sentimental value of the original stone, but I guess I see it as, life happens and this shows my DH loves me enough to roll with the punches. Men aren't like us, so he probably won't even think twice about it. They tend to be fixers. We tend to hold on more.

He is still buying the ring for YOU and only you and it still has sentiment behind it. I'd go with a whole new ring but if you can't for understandable reasons, just use the same stone btu DEFINETLY get a new setting.
