when cashing wedding gifts at the bank.......

when cashing wedding gifts at the bank.......

for those checks that are written out to 'Mr. & Mrs. Johnson'- can I still sign my maiden name on the back to endorse it? I'm thinking since I don't have my marriage license back yet I can't sign as Helen Johnson?? And our joint account is in my maiden name. I asked DH to ask the bank, but he thinks he can endorse them solo even if it says Mr. & Mrs.??? I was thinking he's wrong, but I figured I'd ask my LIW girls since you've all been through it already! TIA!

I think I signed my maiden name bc the account still had my maiden name. Fortunately, I was able to go to one of the clerks that knew me and she knew I was getting married, so it wasn't a big deal.

I actually called up the bank to ask this! Thankfully, the lady completely understood and told me they get plenty of these questions.

I was told it was okay for me to sign my maiden name (both our names are on the account), but I also had him sign the back as well. They've been cashing it in no problem.

at my bank, they made me sign my FH's last name if the check was made out to Mr. and Mrs. XXX.... which was really annoying since I never took his name! I said 'how is this legal? That's not my name... they told me the check would be rejected if the name on the front didn't match the back.....

so, apparently, they were wrong if you didn't have to!

They don't even check - my parents deposited them for us while we were on our honeymoon. Just write 'deposit only' and the account # -- or have DH sign since it's his last name. You don't need two sigs. Actually if you just do the 'deposit only' option, you don't need a sig at all.

That's what we had to do too! Oh well..It didn't bother me and that's the only time I've ever had to sign DH's last name as my own so it's all good

Im pretty sure I signed as my new name... it didn't matter at all. We had no problems depositing any of them. Just make sure you're putting them in a joint account obviously, you really shouldnt have any probs! HAVE FUN!

For us, this was the biggest hassle ever. We couldnt cash the checks until after the marriage certificate came and I had to sign them with my DH's last name even though I'm not changing mine. I basically flipped out at someone at the bank when over an hour later they were trying to still figure out what to do because I;m keeping my name.

So my advice, change your name first, on the bank account and such, and then cash the checks.

At least I'm not the only one. I was annoyed that I was getting hassled becuase I keeping my name.... which seemed somewhat counterintuitive to me.......

You would think in this day and age the banks would have something in place to handle this...lots of women keep there maiden names!

wow!! I can't believe some of these responses, that they banks don't even care what your legal name is!! Now you know how easy it is to get away with fraud!!

DH just signed his name...I didnt sign them b.c my maiden name was on the account. They should allow him to deposit them with just his signature

Our bank told us this as well (after we listened to a friend who told us that DH had to sign them all - and DH didn't write this on any of them - luckily the bank teller was nice and deposited them).

Wow--some banks are really stict. I would think that they go through this often enough that they would find a way to make it less stressful for everyone involved.

what...?? Who is making up the rules at your bank? haha
I did NOT take DH's name either & just signed My Name on the back of the Mr & Mrs checks...the bank said i could do it 'just this once'...since only MY name was on the account..and DH was not there...same thing at his bank...that is why we now have both names on all accounts

Re: when cashing wedding gifts at the bank.......

oh, the other thing about my bank.....

checks written to Mr. & Mrs MUST be endorsed by both of us, even if it was being deposited in our joint account.....

They said only checks written to Mr. OR Mrs could be endorsed by one of us....

never mind the fact that I don't have his last name, and I'm a Dr., not a Mrs..... I swear, I think I should have let MIL sign the checks... at least she's legally Mrs. XXXX

yeah, my bank was wierd

I kept my maiden name and was told to sign my name and put my husbands name in parenthesis. They deposited so I guess it worked.

My sister works for a bank and she told me to do this.

DH signs
I sign my maiden name and married name

So there were 3 signatures on those checks

i think what we did was he signed them and then i signed maiden then married names and he signed again....it was something about him having to sign twice because his name was on the account and mine was in my maiden name....yea that whole process was fun
