Where can we afford?!

We JUST started looking for a house this past weekend and we are really focused on pinching every penny so that we can buy our first home at some point in 2011...

I grew up in Woodbury and I have family in suffolk. I work in the city and my husband works in bergen county NJ (its a sales position and he won't be in that territory for too long)....

We are looking on LI (OBVI) and westchester county. What towns do you guys love that are reasonably priced........?!

Re: Where can we afford?!

It honestly depends on what you consider 'reasonably priced.'

Re: Where can we afford?!

Well I went out in Huntington growing up and I love its 'main street' town vibe....are there any fun towns along those lines? Despite growing up in Nassau I am actually more familiar with Suffolk bc I have TONS of cousins in Smithtown. We don't want to go too far out east bc of work...

And ya, 500 is a pretty decent budget. We are using coupons at the supermarket to make this happen!!

Re: Where can we afford?!

I think our limit would have to be Port Jeff at the VERY east-est haha! He grew up in Westchester but his parents own a home in Westhampton and we think they'll end up eventually living there full time. My parents want to move into Suffolk because my poor dad has had about enough of the school taxes he's paying.

Thing is, we'll both most likely always work in the city.....so I don't want to compromise our QOL bc of commuting.

I thought we had it easy bc we're both from NYC suburbs but its more confusing than I imagined!

Re: Where can we afford?!

What about Northport? The train ride in isn't bad and the downtown main street area is just wonderful! I grew up there and wish DH would have wanted to move there...but its a bit further than we wanted to go from work!

Re: Where can we afford?!

There are a few houses for sale in my neighborhood. North Babylon gets a bad rep for some reason, but it's only bad in the parts that are actually Wyandanch. These two houses are in AWESOME areas

FH and I LOVED this block, but couldn't afford the house that was for sale on it when we looked.

Right off of DPA and close to the train, but still in a quiet neighborhood.

Re: Where can we afford?!

Babylon Villiage is awesome--- FH and i moved in October.... You can catch express trains from the Babylon Train Station. FH takes the train to Jersey City so train location was important to us-- and we love livivng in the village we walk everywhere and its so quaint.

Re: Where can we afford?!

I grew up in Massapequa, which seems to be a town a lot of girls on LIW look at. Also, if you're looking more in Suffolk, what about Miller Place? It has a great school district and is close to a lot of places.
