where to live
so DH's family is from Westchester County and my family is from strong island.we are VERY close (hollerrrrrr) to begin our house hunt!
fortunately, westchester and long island aren't too far although traffic is a mega-b1tch.
i am so super duper close with my parents and i would love for my mom to play an important role in helping us with kids someday. my grandma practically raised my brother and i as both of my parents worked full time and i would love for my kids to have the same experience....plus, day care/child care is a chunk of change.
anyways, for anyone out there at a similar juncture...starting to look for homes....or even if you're not quite there....how are you and your DH deciding where to buy a house and start a family?

Re: where to live
Here's my input:We were supposed to move about 45 minutes away from both sets of parents. However, things fell through and we now live around the corner from ILs and under 10 minutes from my parents.
I love, love, love being close. It's so easy to see everyone, and there's never any traffic. When we have kids in 4-5 years or so, we might make another move...since our house is really a starter house...and we couldn't have more than 2 SMALL children in it.
I also thought that I would want to go far....however, when we make our next move...it's going to most likely be to one of the next couple of towns over because I really like being close.

Re: where to live
We've kinda been going back and forth about this for the past couple years.Like you we are really close with both sides. We currently live Upstate about 8hrs away from NYC (where I'm from). His parents recently semi-retired to GA where the older brother and his family are.
We are still Upstate and the only one really left was the middle brother who recently passed away unexpectedly. So now it's just the two of us.
You would think then it makes total sense to move back to NYC.
Not so much. Cost of living is WAY cheaper here. I have a REALLY good job. I'm in architecture where even though there are TONS more firms in NYC the field has been hit hard lately due to the economy. So finding a new job in NYC would be really hard.
Did I mention I have a really good job?
And we already have a house now in the suburbs which definitely in the next two years we are moving because we are bursting at the seams. Much less room for kids! So we'll have to make a decision soon about where we want to be. The next house we buy I want it to be our forever home.
It's so hard!

Re: where to live
we are having a similar issue. i'd like to be closer to moms, but we dont want to live in nassau or suffolk. so that leaves queens and only queens. we wont go further. I dont want to buy a coop because im afraid of commitment. i cant afford a house nor are we ready to deal with that level of work. so at this point, we decided to just keep renting and figured that things will work out after we have a kid... we found out that they are making a million new developements in hunters point. so we are looking into that since it will coincide with the time we will start looking to buy something.
