Re: which european city to go to?
I do this whenever I go to Europe! We always plan a long layover so we can explore a new city!
Thessaloniki is a really nice city, I had a blast in Amsterdam
, but one of my favorite places, which isn't on your list
is Dublin. I can't stress how much fun I had there and how nice the people are!

well on the way there we are stopping in athens, so we will see historic stuff. then for the rest of our trip we will be relaxing and seeing ruins, etc
so for the stop-over on the way back, i think id like to see a CITY. buut primarily, something that is easy for us (easy transportation to get around, some/most people speak english, we'd feel safe, not toooo expensive, but still stuff to see)
help!

Re: which european city to go to?
Why isn't Paris on the list? That would be my vote. Otherwise, Vienna is really lovely, and there's lots to see in Frankfurt. Berlin is another good option!

How long are you spending in Athens? We did two days on our way back from Crete to London (to Dublin, which I HIGHLY recommend!), and, honestly, two days was more than enough. I would add time on the tail end of your trip, not in Athens. Just my two cents.

We didn't rent a car--we realized we would have NO idea what the signs meant, so we opted out of it.
We did a day in Santorini that we booked through the hotel (which was AMAZING), and a day at Balos Lagoon which we did on our own with another Sandcastle couple (far, but again totally amazing). We took the bus into Chania, which is the nearest city.
We had an amazing time just lounging, to be honest with you. We did 3 days in Paris to start our trip, and they were whirlwind days so it was nice to have the time to just breathe. There are little towns and stuff that you can walk to/take the bus to, and they offer excursions through the hotel that we just didn't take.
HTH! Let me know if you have any more questions!
edited because I'm a moron who put my comment in your quote!
