I was watching this TV Show and on it her boyfriend proposed right in the middle of her graduation party, in front of her whole family and all her friends & I laughed at how dangerous that would be. What if she says no? lol. How embarrassing! (which she did, of course) It got me thinking though -
How did your DH do it? Did he pop the question in public or private? And how would you have preferred it?
Personally - my dh proposed very privately, exactly how i'd hoped he would (during a quiet picnic by the lake). I'm not really the kind of girl who likes a lot of attention, so I was glad that he didn't do it in front of strangers (even family). Kind of a private moment that i savored.
But i know that my good friend was proposed to during a family get together and everybody knew it was gonna happen except for her - they even got it on video. And she LOVED that.
so how about you? Which would you prefer?

DH proposed privately as well. I made sure to let him know that I don't like to be the center of attention and he better never propose in public. I loved that it was a moment that both of us shared. We were able to enjoy it, let it sink in and then let the world know.

DH proposed on a beach in Aruba at night. It was so nice. I wouldnt have wanted it any other way

DH proposed in private in my apt. That's how we both preferred it. We both don't like calling attention to ourselves.

DH proposed at the beach at night. We were on the lifeguard tower. There were people around but it was dark so I doubt anyone could see.
I wouldn't want him to do it in front of everyone

I'm not sure how to answer your poll but I picked the first one. DH proposed in one of the most remote regions in the world but there were a few spectators. I wouldn't have it any other way.

First fiancee proposed at my 21st b-day dinner in front of my parents, sister and friends. We broke up a year later.
DH planned a very romantic proposal on Cape Cod at the Weequassit Inn, with a little help from the maitre'd. Our closest friends were with us and were clued in on the whole thing. We had a lovely dinner seated in the dining room, at the windows overlooking Pleasant Bay. After dinner the maitre'd came up to the table and invited us to have an after dinner drink on the outside patio, as guests of the chef (still clueless here). Gorgeous setup, the patio was on a little ridge above the beach, fenced in and ringed with candles. There was a table set for four, with champagne in an ice bucket, a plate of chocolate covered strawberries (still clueless). The waitress opens the champagne, we sit, toast to good times and good friendship. Then the maitre'd appears with a silver domed tray and announces that he has some more goodies for us. He comes over to me and opens up the tray.......... on a bed of rose petals is an open ring box with a ring in it. (not clueless anymore !). I start crying, DH starts crying, our friend Bill keeps saying 'I don't hear anything', so DH croaks out 'will you' and I just say yes. I look up at the restaurant, and the windows are lined with dinner guests who wanted to watch the proposal, since the maitre'd had announced it to the whole dining room. It was just perfect.
That was on June 5th, 2006.

DH went to a Knicks game a few weeks ago where a guy proposed and the girl said no. How embarrassing for that poor guy.

My DH proposed out to dinner...I had no idea it was coming..we often go out to eat at nice places...he got on his knee, everyone clapped, they brought over champagne...its wierd but thats how I always pictured getting engaged lol I loved it...Im not shy so I liked the public engagment (althogh I was surprised he did it thatway bc he is sort of shy)

privatly. I wouldn't have liked it public. Like doing it in a restaurant is fine (meaning obv. other people are around) but drawing everyones attention to it woud have really bugged me.

ugh. I hate those kinds of proposals. Like when they put 'Will You Marry Me?' on the billboard? I've seen that done so many times at Yankee Games and I always hope she'll say no (because I'm mean like that).
I think doing it in public is fine, but I don't like when people are too showy like that.

DH proposed in a park on St. Patrick's Day in Savannah, GA. We had been there once before and it was an awesome trip, so it held meaning for us. We had to DRIVE there though because the weekend we went, there was a crazy snow/ice storm in NY - and it was raining from NJ south - and I was so excited because I was pretty sure it was happening that weekend. DH was getting so MAD at the weather and the flights being changed, etc!
No one was in the park - it was like 7pm and starting to get dark - and he was looking aroudn to make sure no one was there because he is so shy. I wouldn't have minded a proposal in public - in a restaurant would have been nice - and he didn't get down on one knee, he was sitting next to me on a bench (I would have liked the one knee thing) - but the way he did it was very special and very private, and I liked it, so I wouldn't change it.

My mother still brings up how my dad never got on his knee when he proposed 30 years ago
I told DH way before, that getting on his knee (and asking my parents permission beforehand) is very important to me. lol. So he made sure to do it right.

DH proposed privately but he was all lazy about it. It was wrapped under the tree and he made me get up and get it, didn't get down on one knee, and didn't even pause the movie we were watching. Not exactly the stuff of dreams.
I prefer private myself though.

DH proposed in front of a Christmas Tree in his town. We attended the tree lighting and then went to dinner. Then we went across to the street to the tree. There were a couple of families there but it wasn't a big deal. He opened the box and said, 'Well?' (I knew it was coming just not when)
My cousin got engaged at her graduation party. Her father gave a speech saying how proud he was and then her boyfriend at the time got down on one knee next to her. When she turned around he proposed! She seemed ok with it.

Wow I am the only one who chose the 'he did it publicly but I would've preferred private.' He did it at a restaurant in Aruba. I mean, it was PRETTY private but once he got down on one knee, that drew everyone's attention and I am sure my face was bright red! I HATE having attention on me! I mean, I know it could've been WAY worse, like doing it at a game, or making a huge announcement about it, and don't get me wrong, I LOVE the way it happened and I wouldn't trade it for all the world. However, had he ever asked me how I'd want him to ask, I def would've said something alone and private, just the 2 of us.

Mine was very public-as in front of at least 200 people! We were at a luau where they made an announcement for my husband to come up to the stage-I knew right away what was going to happen next. It was very out of character for him since he is sooo shy. It was exciting and great.
