will we save $$ getting a fence in the Fall?

We need a fence and we were going to wait until next spring but someone suggested that we might save if we do it off-season in October. Anyone have any insists?

Re: will we save $$ getting a fence in the Fall?

We got our new fence last fall and didn't save a dime. Sorry.

I just wanted to add that we used Craftsman Custom Fence Company and had a horrible time dealing with their customer service people. our fence is beautiful, but it certainly was not worth the aggravation of having to deal with them.

I recommend looking at other companies for your fence.

Re: will we save $$ getting a fence in the Fall?

We asked about that too, and we were told 'not really'. We just put up our fence last month. If its something thats in high demand (and God knows pvc is) they dont have to lower their prices.

We LOVEDDD the company we dealt with. Let me know if you need more info. It was a recommendation from Johns coworker and the guy that owns the place is a DOLL.
Even being a 'referral' we didnt save much. I never thought fences would be so expensive.

Let me know Michelle!

ETA: A fence place right down the block from us was actually cheaper than the one we got (by like $300) but John walked into the place, and overheard workers saying 'I havent gotten paid in weeks, this $hit $ucks man, this is the last job i do till they pay me' (how improper to say that in an office!!!). The owners ignored the fact that people were waiting, they were rude, obnoxious and SOOO not customer friendly. (Imagine having problems down the road, they looked like car-salesmen attitude people!)
So we went with the guy we knew about and it was worth it. When youre spending a certain amount, a few hundrd doesnt even matter really. He has one small personal team of 'his guys' and doesnt just send any joe shmoe to put up your fence.

Re: will we save $$ getting a fence in the Fall?

Anna- we would love the info on who you used. My parents used Roberts fence and were happy with them. We are not getting PVC because we have to much to fence in and it will got us three times as much as wood. We are going to get a good wood one.

Vanderbilt Fence Co.
Theyre in Sayville.
I'll get you the ph#.

We did pay triple the price of the wood. We put in all around, over 1/3 acre. GULP.

Re: will we save $$ getting a fence in the Fall?

We did PVC as well, and while it is more costly, the life of the fence is much longer, and it requires NO painting or staining EVER. I am ALL about convenience.

If you haven't already, check out the prices and think about the pros and cons before committing to wood.

Re: will we save $$ getting a fence in the Fall?

I have seen some PVC fences that are greening with a mold so you do need to power wash them or something to keep them looking good.
My brother is a general contractor in the Hamptons working on million dollar homes and says that sometimes PVC is not as sturdy as real wood also. I mean, we will look into it all but in the end we just cannot do an all around PVC fence with baby coming and me going down to part time for a while. Thanks for the recommendations too.

Re: will we save $$ getting a fence in the Fall?

i'm glad this question was asked bc i was wondering the very same thing! i hear that you can get it cheaper in the fall / winter. i don't know about the labor of it all, as DH wants to install it himself. but i have been told that te fencing materials can be bought cheaper. i guess we'll see!

Re: will we save $$ getting a fence in the Fall?

Michele, there are several homes in my neighborhood that recently added fences. They are from Port Jeff Fence Co. I don't know anything about the company - just that the fences look really nice

I just wanted to add - personally, I don't think that ANYTHING related to our homes has an 'off-season' these days. Home improvement costs are at a premium but not based on seasons, it's usually based on demand. So, b/c everyone wants those shiny new PVC fences, companies can charge whatever they like, whenever they live.

Good luck, and let me know how you do. We will need a fence next year.

Re: will we save $$ getting a fence in the Fall?

It's been almost a year, and we haven't done a thing to our fence, and it still looks as good as the day it was installed. I guess it varies fence to fence.

Re: will we save $$ getting a fence in the Fall?

I think EVERYTHING in this world needs to be maintained whether is a kitchen countertop or Trumps mansions. I dont think the price of something makes it 'Self cleaning' (hey even a slef cleaning oven needs someone to turn it on ). Its just a matter of how much time and money will be spent on maintaining something.
I cant imagine a plastic fence molding Ive seen wood go bad many more times than ive seen plastic go bad. As a matter of fact our wood fence was falling apart all over the place (well it's 'shelf life' was expired also ). Wood outdoors doesnt withstand the tough winters we've had as well as we would have liked. Thats another reason why we have storm doors over our wood doors. (another thing the previous homeowners didnt bother to do and now we have a wood door that needs touching up, as expensive as it may have been.).

sorry i rambled.

Re: will we save $$ getting a fence in the Fall?

I still cant imagine a white plastic fence 'greening' with mold.
Michelle those million dollar homes, im sure, have the best quality wood around if they have wood fences. im sure its farrr different from the woood sold to 'average homes'
That wood fence probably costs more than our homes

Wow - im really surprised to see that PVC costs more than wood! Not that I have a house that I can use a big fence around...but still, i thought wood was king :D

Re: will we save $$ getting a fence in the Fall?

Wood is wood is wood. There are no 'premium trees' in the forest that are set aside for million dollar homes. The cost is calculated by the TYPE of wood you buy (you wouldn't buy pine for an outdoor fence) and the fancy decorative styling that some fences can have. While there might be some slight cost variation according to who you buy from and what designs you choose, I highly doubt that a basic stockade wood fence around a million dollar home would cost more (per sq. ft.) than around my home.

Cedar is known to 'weather' the best, which is why it is often used as siding on homes (including my own). But, it does unfortunately require a lot of maintainence - that includes powerwashing, staining/treating and sealing - on a pretty frequent basis (probably every 2-3 years). I think the same would hold true of a Cedar wood fence.

PVC fencing IS a lot more maintainence free, but mold can grow and accumulate on ANY surface that has the right conditions - and, judging from the very wet conditions we had this winter and spring, I do believe powerwashing could be necessary, especially if the surrounding yard has a lot of greenery, is more wooded than an 'average' neighborhood and doesn't get a lot of direct sunlight.

Claud: I wish that no 'premium' tree explanation applied to my kitchen cabinets and bookshelves! They want to charge me a fortune. Its just trees people

Re: will we save $$ getting a fence in the Fall?

There goes the facts and figures 'research' response. Saw it comin.

Yes, wood is wood. That is correct. But consumers that are buying furniture lets say, dont say 'ah wood is wood, give me a wood bedroom set'. You can spend a very wide range of $$$ on a *Wood* bedroom set. (yes depending on the quality and type, etc etc etc.)

Its not a matter of anyone getting charged more for something, whether you have $10 or $1,000.

Its a matter of the *type* of wood the millionaires would buy versus the wood fence we just took down. I highly doubt they would put a basic stockade fence around their mansions. That would be a sight to see.

Yes, the mold is created FROM the conditions, but the PVC fence itself does not 'age' as much as wood would (hah that souns funny) in those conditions.

Stef I have to say, I love the look of certain woods, and I never fathomed the price of PVC either! I also thought 'wood was king'
I LOVEE lots of things in wood. Wood is classic, its gorgeous.
