Wisdom teeth extraction- I'm home & awake now

Has anyone ever had a wisdom tooth or any tooth actually removed at a DENTIST'S OFFICE & been given a sedative to knock you out?

I'm going to have a wisdom tooth removed tomorrow morning at my dentist & he is giving me a sedative. I am terrified only because 12 years ago this month I was at an oral surgeons office & they were removing teeth & I had an anaphylactic reaction to the sedative..

Someone please tell me they've knocked you out before... help.....

when you have a root canal do they knock you out? Im trying to find someone that has been 'put to sleep' before at a dentists office..

seriously I AM asking for prayers.. I keep thinking the absolute worst.. I am so effing morbid.

My friend has that type of reaction and has to take antibiotics before you goes to her appointment. Did you tell the dentist?

When I had my wisdom teeth out I had a local and stayed awake.. I put on my IPOD and by the time the first song was in the chorus, the tooth was out.. I also wasn't knocked out for a root canal.. And I was totally fine for both..

Would you be ok being awake??

I hope everything goes well, with whatever you decide!!!

yepp the dentist knows. He won't be using the medications that caused the reaction.

Strangely enough, after the incident I went to an allergist to see what specifically I was allergic to. Neither drug came up positive as an allergen, so the drs think I had a reaction to the preservative placed in/on the vial of drugs

I may choose to stay awake tomorrow.. I gotta see what my options are. The iPod is a good idea. I may have to steal vins

I had all wisdom teeth removed and was put to sleep. I was nervous about it b/c I had never been put asleep before but I came out fine.

If I had a prior reaction like you I'd be VERY scared but at the same time I would want to know what exactly was the cause so just incase you ever need emergency surgery and you have no choice but to go under you'd be able to say 'but i'm allergic to...' it is scary to think about but anything can happen in a split second like my brother getting neurosurgery or when my sister had to have her appendix taken out ASAP one day a few summer's ago.

friends of mine, however, did have a local when they had their wisdom teeth out --- they listened to music and they said it was fine.

Heather you know I just had this done and my biggest fear was somehting happening when they put me under.

It was NOTHING. I went in, they sat me down, hooked me up to a blood pressure machine (which is funny b/c when they start talking to you about the procedure and what they are going to do your hear rate goes up and the machine goes crazy) they stick a brick in your mouth (plastic thing to keep your mouth open) and they say night night.......you wake up you are a little drowsy and tired but its really nothing.

I took my vicodin every 4 hours like I was told to and didnt feel any pain at all what so ever. Afterwards its rough, buy yourself yogurt, jello...you will NOT be able to chew.

Sending you tons of prayers, it wasnt half as bad as i thought it was going to be

i forgot to add... my tooth isn't impacted. It just hasn't broken through yet.

I have somewhat convinced myself to stay awake tomorrow. I charged Vin's iPod and everything... we'll see what my options are tomorrow.

I am just verrrryyyyy nervous being that I have a bad history with teeth & drs offices. I'm so terrified that I could have another reaction and the dentist not having an epi pen on hand..

I am NOT going to be able to sleep tonight

Re: Wisdom teeth extraction

I actually have to have a tooth pulled this week. Not a wisdom tooth but a molar, it broke down below the gumline and there's nothing they can do to fix it so it has to be yanked. Complication is that, since I'm pregnant, i can't have any sedative at all. But, i have traumatic fears of the dentist, like I get gas for a cleaning. I just can't handle being in that chair. But because of the baby, the only thing I can have it a topical anisthetic and when it's all over, tylenol.

Good Luck!! I would def. suggest trying to remain awake if you had that reaction to being put out. See if they can give you the laughing gas and then just listen to music and take the Vics after. I heart the laughing gas.

I had all 4 done at once and just used novacaine. I was too afraid of being put to sleep.
I didnt have one ounce of pain after. Never took vicodin, tylenol, nothing.

if you are this afraid, just stay awake. Put the IPod on and close your eyes.

I didnt even have an ipod. I get weezy after a paper cut but this didnt bother me. I guess b/c I didnt feel anything or hear anything.

Oh this was at an oral surgeons office not at a dentists office.

Good luck!!

I had mine out 3 weeks ago. I wasn't asleep, they gave me novacaine and the gas. Can you have the gas?

Re: Wisdom teeth extraction

I had mine done at a dentist office. But they only gave me novacain. I dont like to talk about it. I HATE oral surgery.

ETA: I had to go twice because the first time I was crying so much cus I could feel the pressure and was freaking out so they had to have me back a 2nd time to finish. I wish I could have been put out or given a sedative. Everyone else Ive talked to has been fine from those. So Im sure you will be. I am forever traumatized from all the dental work I have had done.

I had all four removed at once (not impacted) in the Oral Surgeons office -- they knocked me out.

I had other impacted teeth pulled down (again in the oral surgeon's office) but they gave me the gas for that.

Both times/ways were fine.

Re: Wisdom teeth extraction

sorry- just saw this..

it was no bueno... I was awake- just took some lidocaine & off we went. Vins iPod didnt work so I had to listen to the whole thing. The whole 1 hr & 15 mins of it...

I felt the pressure but not too bad, then the pain at the very end. one of my roots had a huge hook on it and got stuck so 20 mins was spent trying to yank tha thing out. the tears were just POURING down my face from the pain.

They didnt give me any pain killers- just told me to take 4 advil every 4 hours...

this is torture- im hungry but cant open my mouth..

i am going to talk to my real dentist (his partner did my tooth today) and see if i really need the next one out..

thanks- back to sleep now.. I have a massive headache too because of the pain- atleast thats what the dr said
