I'm the manager on this work project and i have this colleague - where I am two years senior to her and she acts like she's my superior! She tries to tell me what to do or goes straight to my manager w/ questions rather than coming to me. It is getting to the point where I can't take it anymore. I am not an aggressive person and she knows this - so she tries to act like a know it all in team meetings w/ heads of the company and undeniably they probably think I am sitting around while she is doing it all. In a time where people are getting laid off - I'm pissed!!!!! Sorry - vent over

I think that if she knows that she is supposed to go to you and you are her manager and she is going over your head and not listening to you, then she needs to be put in her place.
I would ask her 'is there a reason why you feel the need to go over my head?' and make it clear to her that you are her manager and if she has any problems you would be more than happy to help her with them seeing as how you are her manager!
I think she may want to sort of stand out, and make her mark and leave an impression on other 'higher ups' to maybe further herself in the field? Would that maybe make sense?

I absolutely agree with you - that she wants to make a mark and leave an impression - and that's exactly what she's doing. I can't even discuss this with my superiors as I feel they would all side with her - if I confront her I don't want it getting back to the other managers as that would only make me look bad. I feel like i'm stuck b/t a rock and a hard place!!! ughh i need a drink
