Would this offend you???

As some of you know, I lost my teaching job in June.

I have been on the search for a new job. For now I am subbing as well as doing other things until i find something.

So finally I got a call today and I was excited!!!


The woman on the phone asks me 'Do you speak Spanish?'--I said 'I understand a lot, but I do not speak fluent Spanish.'

She said 'Sorry we need Spanish speaking only!!'

I guess my new last name threw them off!!!


Not sure if I was bothered because I really want a new job or because I felt excluded!!!

while I don't know your new last name (which I guess might lead this person to think you spoke spanish), I might be more annoyed than offended, that you almost had a job prospect but lost out by not speaking spanish. I can totally understand that you'd feel excluded though, I'm sure its because you resent that you're not teaching right now. maybe it was an ESL teaching job? sorry that happened, but I guess they just have certain requirements. good luck on the job search!!!

It was for a job working one-on-one with students from low-income families 3-5 years old (as they put it).

it just *****!! I hate being a damn sub!! The kids torment me.

I'm also subbing and I LOVE it!! I taught 3rd grade for the past two years and I am so happy to be JUST subbing again!!

I am subbing in Queens. How about you?????

Ok, so $147.00 a day to sub isn't that bad, but you never know what kind of class you are going to get.

I had 8th grade the other day and the kid told me to go F myself!

The school is Pre K-8.

I just want something steady.

I don't know if Id be offended if they really did need a bilingual teacher which does happen. if they profiled you, thats TOTALLY wrong, but if its a classoom of bilingual kids, would you really want to be in there not speaking the language?

I agree though it feels yucky. Thats happened to me only was with an apartment DH and I wanted to see; we were using our marrie name before we got married and frankly, Jennifer Ljubicich does sound REAL anglo...so when she saw me she blinked and was uncouth enough to say... 'I didnt realize you were ..>Spanish.'.... Uh huh what she MEANT to say is she thought I was white, especially because she saw my DH first...cest la vie. Just some ignorant people out there but Im crossing my fingers yyou find something you really like.
