Ok I am copy and pasting verbatim what my friend who is a vet is telling me to tell you to do.

''The mother needs to be trapped/tested & if mpt fe;v or fiv (+) then spayed....the kitten nees to be evaluated...if it is malnourished it will be obvious to the vet--- the kitten cant be tested til it is like 9 wks old---but if mom is positive?... so--- trap mom and take baby and mom to the vet first ---and...the mother does not go off and hunt for the baby-- kittens nurse for 5 wks or so---they dont eat killed or solid foods ...and feeding ferrals or 'ferrals' (aka strays) is nottttt helping anyone---- if they want to do their pazrt and help-- trap/test/spay-neuter/release (if applicable)---feeding perpetuates problems only.

Feral cat colonies suffer if people just feed them.
I would wonder why the other 3 died?
I am sure she cares for them and their well-being-- or she wouldnt be writing--- please tell her to contact organizations.'

Thank you for asking your friend. I have every intention of trapping and spaying the mom, but this little one is the priority right now. I just don't know if I should take the baby away from the mom at this point or wait to see what happens. I don't want to do the wrong thing.

No problem This is her response to what you wrote.
i cannot see the exact situation or know exactly thru a phone/internet -she will have to use her best judgement. MY POINT IS NOT TO UPSET OR OFFEND HER OR MAKE HER DEFENSIVE, please let her know.

Awww I hope this kitten ends up okay. Have you been feeding her when the mom is away? Did you feed the ones that died?

We just noticed last night that the three looked lethargic, but I didn't want to touch them...I thought, maybe they were just sleeping. This morning, we went to check on them and found out that they had died. We took the one remaining one, bought kitten milk and a small bottle but she would not suck on it, so we decided to just put her back with the mom and see how she did today.

Honestly Renee just my own feeling would be to take the kitten to the vet. I have a bad feeling that the mother is not giving the kitten enough nutrition. I guess it is a chance you have to take it is up to you - r eally. That is probably what I would do. I dono .. and oh also trap the Mom at the same time maybe? Bring them both?

If the kitten won't drink for the bottle, you can also feed with her with a medicine dropper. She'l get the hang of it. Also massage her little belly lightly after she feeds. It stimulates the bowels so she can have a movement. Sounds gross, but that's what the mammas do, the lick the kitten's bellies.

It is not unusual for feral cats to have kittens die shortly after birth. My cat was one of four, and the only kitten that survived.
It might also be that the mamma cat is just too young. I also had a feral that brought me all her babies to take care of after she gave birth the first time. Two kittens died two days after birth, one died the next day, and I had one left that did survive and was adopted. Mamma got fixed after her third litter.
