Re: complicated question about planning another party...

Yes plenty! Here goes:

1. Send them their invitations a month before anyone else - or just count them as coming - or call them the DAY they should have received their invite!

2. Encourage MIL to dress like a freak and make a fool of herself. (ok - I'm kidding about that one)

3 & 4. Don't do seating arrangements at ALL. Just do a 'head table' so you place the most important people where you want them - have the hall mark the table reserved and put each person's name at their seat and that's it. Let the rest of them find their own damn seats then they have no one to blame but themselves.

5. Only serve beer and wine! It's an option. Or, just tell them you will have to take special drink requests ahead of time, in writing.

6. Have ugly centerpieces! No - I'm kidding. RENT your CP's (made of silk flowers -- even better) so NO ONE gets to take them home AND you save mad $$$$!!!

7. Hmmm... you're on your own on that one!! Unless you want to start dropping sedatives into their 'special drinks'!

I agree with all of this, but I do have to say- trying to control cell phone use & smoking is an exercise in futility. I say if they miss anything important, then that's their loss. (and at least they will not be ordering the wrong liquor or stealing the CPs).

Re: complicated question about planning another party...

I know its not funny at all but my DH's family is just like this. It drives me insane and I hate to do anything with them as a result.

In any case, I think the only preventive ideas i have for you is to: IGNORE THEM!

They are the ones that should be embarassed...you just do what you want as you like it and ignore them.
