I would just be up front with her and tell her the party is fast approaching and you have to start paying for everything and that you remember her mentioning she would help you out and see what she says!!

I would take her up on her offer. She said she would help and now you need her help. I always pull the wild card on my MIL and say 'It is your son you know?' That usually ticks her off and i end up not spending a dime. Me and my MIL don't really get along though.

For me, personally, I couldn't ask even though it was offered. She knows what is going on and when the party is and if she really wanted to help, she would be offering without you having to ask. I had a similar situation with an aunt and a shower. She offered to help out but never asked how much, what she could do to help or anything. She and her daughter came empty handed to the shower too!

She suggested the party and offered up the money so yes, I would ask. Unfortuantely, I see no easy or smooth way of doing the asking. You'll just have to be straightforward and deal with the awkwardness.

The best I can come up with is starting off by mentioning that the next payment for the hall is $xxxx amount and is due in xx weeks and if she'll be ready to contribute some money by then, and if so how much? And if she won't be ready by then, ok, the next payment is due in xx months and how much would she be able to contribute at the time?

I'm sure I don't need to tell you that we really don't care what the payment schedule at the hall is!
