Re: how much do your IL's know about how you run your household?

OMG no!!

My FIL knows a little bit more about our finances than I would care for him to know but that's because DH is very open with him about it (more than I would like him to be) but he would NEVER just come right out and ASK!

But you know what...in some aspects it's actually good that he told her so she doesn't make the wrong assumptions and then treat you a certain way based on those assumptions -- that's something that happens to us all the time with my in-laws. My MIL in particular seems to think that we are rich and therefore should be sending DH's Goddaughter (niece) hundreds of dollars in gifts everytime she farts. Heaven forbid we should buy a can of paint and paint a room in our house without first buying the spoiled brat a present because it's fecking Tuesday.

Oh my. Where am I going with this! Well, as you can tell, we do have our own issues with the inlaws...what I'm saying is that in our case, since my MIL doesn't have a clue about our actual financial situation she makes assumptions and then attacks DH based on those assumptions...so he kind of opened up to FIL about our finances to get his mother off his back and it has sort of worked.

So while I do agree that ILs have no business being all up in our finances, and yes, that was obnoxious of her - I do think some good *might* come of what your DH had to do. And I can certainly empathize with your situation!!!

It never ends with my MIL...

now, she actually has rundown on which of us pays each of our monthly bills.

She cornered DH and started asking him 'does she (meaning me) pay for anything', so he spilled the beans because he didn't want her to think that I don't contribute my fair share. He knows what he did was wrong, and he's not going to do it again.

I told him if his mother finds out anything ELSE about how we run our lives, I will chop down the money tree

Anyone else's IL's this obnoxious?

That stinks. I hate to say it, but some MIL's are just friggin control freaks. Fortunately for me, my MIL is 83 years old and has enough of a challenge just trying to keep her health together. But I've heard this story too many times before, especially on the boards.

Poor hubby. Forgive him for being cornered and accept his promise not to do it again. Marriage is challenging enough without people interfering where it's none of their business.

H E L L NOOOO!!! First off, I don't speak to my MIL unless I absolutely must. She doesn't even call the house, DH always calls on his cell phone. I would NEVER tell her how our house is run because she ALREADY tries to tell people how to do things.

If anyone knows how things are done, it's my dad when I ask for advice. I trust him with everything, so if we need help or advice, it's him I turn to

My IL's know everything about every aspect of our lives mostly because DH tells them everything. I dont really mind because we are close with them and I dont feel the need to hide how little $ I make.

Re: how much do your IL's know about how you run your household?

I've got to say, my ILs are the exact opposite. When we were looking at condos, MIL kept finding much more expensive houses closer to where they live. I don't know where they think we would have the money to buy the house, since when DH and I got married he had no savings and was paying back loans and it was MY life savings used as a downpayment. It infuriated me that they would think we should go larger, better, and kept showing us ads or homes online...When we had no way of paying for those homes! IMO she NEVER should have been looking at or picking out houses for us, let alone $400,000 homes when we just didn't have the downpayment and couldn't have afforded the mortgage. So they ask very few questions about how we pay, and yet seem to assume we have much more $ than we do have. And asked DH to chip in a big chunk of $ for his grandparent's anniversary cruise when we just don't have that much $ to spare, and as far as I know no other grandchildren our age were asked to chip in like the parents were.

i don't think it's anyone's business and they don't ask. he works on wall street; i'm an editor. figure out which one of us makes more money! honestly, no one looks at it that way because it's our business and no one else's. i would be shocked if she asked because MIL isn't like that.
