Re: What is the airline's bereavement discount?

It varies by airline and even then I believe it's handled on a case by case basis. I would ask very nicely, be as flexible as possible, and if you happen to be a frequent flyer with miles on the airline, it can't hurt to mention it. We ended up with Southwest which was by far the cheapest and most accommodating. I would check all the airlines that go to your destination, though. Good luck.

Re: What is the airline's bereavement discount?

I was on the other end...i had vacation plans and then my great aunt died...so they airline changed the flight for me no charge...but I did have to bring something from the funeral...

also...when we ahd a family emergency in Spain...Delta said that only if the doctor wrote something that he was calling the family together for the end...would be acceptable..

Re: What is the airline's bereavement discount?

Sometimes you do better getting a ticket on priceline.com instead of the discount program.

Re: What is the airline's bereavement discount?

I would probably not try to get a bereavement discount at all. From what I have heard, it tends to cost more with the supposed discount than without it, and I believe you need to produce proof, i.e., a death certificate. Depending on where you are going and what airlines you are willing to look at, you can probably get a fairly cheap rate without any discount.

Re: What is the airline's bereavement discount?

When my grandmother passed away in January we had the hardest time getting an airline ticket for bereavement. I dont know if airlines do that anymore. One airline wanted to charge us over 600 dollars just to fly to FL.

I agree with the other girls, try getting last minute deals because you will have better luck that way then calling airlines and getting a bereavement deal.

Re: What is the airline's bereavement discount?

Bereavement Discount is supposed to be a cheaper priced ticket for a last minute flight because of someones death. However, the airlines don't know what the word discount means and they jack up the prices when they hear bereavement. They figure you are mourning and will pay anything quickly. I had to go to a funeral in Florida a couple of years ago and they wanted $700. Yeah ok. It wasn't first class.

Check around, call the airlines. You can probably get a much cheaper ticket. Try going by stand by.
