Your cocktail hours...

Your cocktail hours...

Hello Newlyweds,
Just in need of your personal opinions. For your cocktail hour did you have the dj play or did you have a string ensemble? What do you think the guests like better. I am getting strings for the ceremony, but I am torn or whether I should keep them for the cocktail hour or have the dj play music. What is more enjoyable? Thanks your opinions mean a lot since you have already done the 'cocktail hour' thing. LOL

We had the lead singer of our band with a pianist--he did tons of billy joel, sinatra etc-- I think live music would be nice versus the DJ-- Just my opinion to let the DJ set the mood for the reception and keep it classical for the cocktail hour--either way your guests will love it

We had a steel drum band, and it was incredible!

If your options are strings or DJ, I think you should consider the atmosphere you are trying to create, and then choose the music. To me, strings create a very 'classic' and dignified setting, where a DJ is more 'fun'.
Which ever you choose, I'm sure it will be wonderful.

We had the dj play and to be honest, people were so busy eating and drinking that I don't think they would have cared what kind of music was playing. I learned this after my sisters wedding. She hired a harpist to play during the cocktail hour and many people didn't even remember him being there (including me). IMO- it was a waste of money.

We had soft jazz playing, it was perfect background music. Everyone was busy chatting and eating it worked great.

The place where we had our reception, there was music provided in the cocktail hour room.
Would have loved a steel drum band though

I have to agree with JennRenee .. we had steel drums too - but that was the mood I was going for!

we had a pianist - Lands End has a grand piano in the cocktail area. It created such a wonderful atmosphere.

If we would have been able to be outdoors, we would have had a string trio or a steel drum band.

Our DJ set up music for us at the cocktail hour .. it was lighter, softer music than what would typically be played during the reception. I do admit, having muscians play during the cocktail hour is kind of neat .. my husband's brother and his wife had a string ensemble and it was really a great touch .. because it was so much different than any other wedding we had been to (and I regret not getting strings for at least our ceremony) .. however, I would recommend that you make sure there is enough room for them to set up and for your guests to easily maneuver around them ... things were very cramped at their Fox Hollow cocktail hour with the 3-piece ensemble.

we had a string quartet for the ceremony- who then played for the cocktail hour
IF you have TWO diff rooms- one for cocktail and one for reception, you may be better off keeping the ensemble for the cocktail hr. The DJ may not be able to set up his equip for both rooms in time for your cocktail hr!
