Recently, Pat and I started talking about children. We aren't ready to have any, but we are now ready to discuss them (a large positive step for us!), and we starting throwing out names we like. When I told him the name I absolutely love for a girl, he laughed so hard I thought he was going to hyperventilate, and I kept saying 'WHAT?! WHAT?!' When he finally got the words out, he said that that name, especially with with our last name, sounds like we'd be raising a future porn star. I disagree, but I think I may be blinded by my love for this name. So tell me the truth...
Does Raven Jade ________ sound like a stripper? (our last name starts with R, is 2 syllables and very Irish) Be honest, I can take it! : )
Also... what are some of your favorite names? Hopefully that will give me better perspective. Thanks!

Your (HONEST!) opinion is wanted! : )
I've always preferred more traditional or old-fashioned names. I don't have any favorites, but my choice would be to stay away from trendy or currently popular names. Raven Jade doesn't remind me of a stripper, but it does sound kind of like a stage name - actually, World Wrestling Federation comes to mind ;-)...
PS - when we had to choose a 'French' name in my grade-school French class I picked the name Renee!

Honestly...
...I like the Jade part but don`t care for Raven. But it`s a very personal choice.
Since our baby-to-be is already in the works, we have of course started the name ideas too. I like Luke or Aidan for a boy. For a girl, Renee or Ryan. (Subject to change by October) As I said about it being a personal thing, 2 of my sister-in-laws thought Ryan for a girl was 'odd' but it doesn`t change me liking it. The feminine Celtic version is actually Ryann but I think it would always be misspelled. Anyway, I think you both kind of have to like the name and it has to sound good with your last name. (You notice I said these are the names I like, hubby likes Luke and Renee but isn`t too hot on Ryan, neutral on Aidan) Or can do what my parents did, my mother named the first and my father named the 2nd.

Okay...
... so it appears that my taste is a bit out there. Thanks for your opinions. : )
Elizabeth ~ I really like your choices, considering my middle name is Renee, and my last name is Ryan! : ) My niece's name (first and middle) is Maygan Ryan, so I am partial to Ryan as a girl's name.
For the record, I was also named by both parents ~ Dad chose my first name, and mom chose my middle.
Keep us informed as your taste/choices change. I look forward to seeing things progress! : )

Well to be honest.....
I have to agree with Patrick. It does sound stripperish. I was close on the last name I guessed Reilly. Raven Ryan, I don't know. Girls names are hard for me, there seem to be more boys names that appeal to me.
Good luck! Some people wait to see the babies face then change their minds completely!

SO funny LONG
We have had this discussion in my family numerous times---the porn star comment comes up pretty often-- I have 7 nieces with pretty normal names except Christie Lynn is our closest to a porn star name (and it is not that bad) my last 2 nieces (twins) werent named till they were 4 days old-- I am not joking they were baby A and baby B--they had the middle names picked(named after grandmothers) but were 'fighting' over the first names--my maiden name is really long so it made sense--
Good luck
I have names picked out and we dont plan on having kids for quite some time---

You are smart to have names picked out for the future. We aren't ready to start a family yet, but I'm glad the name thing came up NOW so we can resolve it before our children start school! : )

That is so true-- and you dont want Baby A and Baby B--believe me-- even as the proud Aunt it was embarrassing after a awhile explaining to people why these poor kids didnt have names---but also a funny story for when they grow up to show how stubborn their parents are!!!
And the only reason they had names on Day 4-- was you have 5 days to fill out the birth certificate!!! SO at least there was a deadline!!!!

Don't be surprised
Speaking from experience don't be surprised if you pick a name and then change it when the time is nearer or even after the baby is born. That happened to me with my daughter. All along I had always wanted a daughter named Beth (my favorite book growing up was Little Women). I even convinced my husband (ex now) that it was the perfect name. But when I was about 8 months pregnant a woman moved into the house across the street from us and her name was...you guessed it, Beth! Now I still wanted to use the name because I loved it, but I just could not stand this woman. She was the biggest nosybody I have ever met. When she heard that I had planned to name my child Beth if it was a girl, she decided to tell everyone in the neighborhood that we were naming the baby after her! Argggghhh.
Oh yes. I did have a little girl. We named her Dawn!

Ya know....
Katherine Elizabeth is a *gorgeous* name. So it just happens to be mine. ;)
But, to answer your question, personally, I don't like the name Raven...dunno why.
Incidentally, we're thinking of Sarah or Ian when our baby comes (NO, not yet!)... We need names that begin w/ I or S. Not as easy as you'd think!
Still working on baby names for my sister's (due 9/3!). We find out Thursday if it's a boy or a girl! YAY!
P.S. Elizabeth; October 7th would be a *great* day to have your baby!!
HAHA!

personal decision- send me baby dust!
But Raven is not a name I woudl choose.
I was joking aroudn with ROb & his freinds about picking names and his friend Howie...came up with Elizabeth for a girl. Thought that was ok...and ROb suggested Glenn for a boy (after his cousin who was killed by a drunk driver) ...
ME, I still like Anthony - after my departed dad.
Guess we have time b4 we decide....
But we are trying to have a baby- so SEND ME BABY DUST!

Ummmm, truthfully Raven reminds me of that old topless bar that used to be on Hempstead Turnpike called Ravens Nest. I like Jade alot.
Even though we are not trying yet, we often discuss names. For a girl we like Emma Elizabeth, and a boy is Joshua Edward. The only thing is our last name begins with a W, so their initials would be EEW, and JEW. Not thrilled about that. Oh well, we have plenty of time!

I don't think it sounds like a stripper, and don't forget, you won't be using her middle name all the time. It will just be 'Raven' mostly. But, if that part of the name bothers you, how about Robyn (or Robin), Rachel, Rebecca, Renee, Rena, etc?

I agree that you may pick a name now and end up changing it anyway. My name was Elizabeth for 2 1/2 days (what my parents were 100% sure they wanted for 9 months). I think it's stupid, but on the 3rd day, they decided that I was too small for a long name and re-named me Susan. Always, wondered how life would be different with an extra 4 letters and different name! Raven reminds me of that little girl on the Cosby show. It's a nice name, but does sound like an 'entertainment' name when put together with Jade. As a compromise, maybe you should put Raven or Jade with a more traditional name that your husband chooses. My choices when we hopefully have kids - Emma for a girl and Alex for a boy.

My opinion - long
I tend to prefer more traditional names myself, so to be honest, neither Raven or Jade appeal to me.
One thing that you also might consider - are you Catholic, and are you planning to baptize the child? If so, the church does encourage you to use a saint's name as one of the child's given names. It is not required, but my church told me that they unofficially frown on very trendy names. (that's the church's opinion - not mine).
Anyway, I think it's great that you're discussing this now. We have just a few weeks left before our baby is born, and believe it or not, I am starting to second-guess the names we've chosen for our little boy. We were planning to be very traditional and name him after his grandfathers - paternal name first, maternal name as middle. Now, I'm not sure.
The problem is, my husband doesn't like any of the boy names that I prefer - Gregory, Nicholas or Eric. He likes David, Adam and Jacob.
Naming after the grandfathers was the only acceptable compromise. So, unless I get up the nerve to tell my husband otherwise, our little boy will be Paul Robert - not a bad name, it's just that Paul is SO common on hubby's side of the family, that I am worried we'll just get laughed at for not being original.
As for my family, my maternal grandfather is Paul, and my Mom is Paula - so I believe they'll be very happy. :)

Claud2001-You`re having a boy!! How wonderful!
I didn`t realize you found out your baby`s gender already. God bless!!! There`s absolutely nothing wrong with naming your child after his grandfathers. Just like trendier names, it`s your choice. Best wishes.
My hubby said we could always name a girl after our two mothers Gertrude Florence...I`m still debating it (OK, not really..with all due respect to the grandmothers)

I'm not crazy about the name Raven, but Jade I LOVE as a first OR middle name. I have heard of and also love the name Jaden, which is kind of a combo of your two names !
Good Luck !

Well, you all have made me think, but it was the Raven's Nest that decided it for me! My unconceived child shall not bring images of topless dancers!!! : )
I'm not a big lover of traditional names, having grown up as a Jennifer, but I definitely don't want my children teased. I think I walk a fine line there though, and will need periodic reality checks to be sure I pick a unique, but not 'weird' name. : ) A friend pointed out to me that if I still have my heart set on Raven Jade and opt not to use it for reasons of practicality, I can always name my daughter Black Green, and it will be almost the same. Hahaha. : )
Claud2001~ Good luck in the coming weeks. I think Paul Robert is a very strong, solid name, and will grow up well with your son. I also like all of the other options you have, both yours and your husband's. I especially love Jacob and Nicholas, both together and seperately. Good luck choosing!

Elizabeth and JennRenee...
Thank you both very, very much for the well wishes. I am in the home stretch of the pregnancy, and as such, feeling quite uncomfortable now. I have 17 days left at work, and I can't wait to start my leave!!
After the baby is born, I'll be sure to sign on and let everyone know how the birth went, and of course, what name we decided upon!
