Hi ladies...hoping you can offer some feedback. We are getting married in a catholic church and FMIL and FH swears that we need to tip the priest even though every board that I look up (and my DOC) agree that you dont do that. Its a religious mass and in bad taste...thats what I thought. My mom tipped the priest back in the 70's but whats the proper thing to do now? The night of the rehearsal dinner I was told to bring the check for the church and the altar service tips..thats it. I also planned to tip the organist on the day of...

For my SIL's wedding my IL's tipped the priest after the wedding. About a week later.

i am your church twin. we did not tip the priest. the organizer (you might have pat) asked up for tips for the altar boys on the the day of the rehearsal.

I have never heard of tipping the priest! We gave a 'donation' to the church but that was all.

I have never heard of this either. Mostly what I have heard is that you give a 'donation' to the church.

well we gave the donation. We didnt give a monetary tip to the monsignor who did our wedding but since MIL knew him very well and was part of that church she gave him a gift which was a watch.

the required donation to the church usually covers the priest's 'stipend' - which is like their pay for performing the service at most churches. not all churches cover that though. i'd just ask the rectory if you're worried and ask if the church fee covers the priest
