i had a good experience with craigs list when I needed to sublet in the upper east side... much cheaper than those scam websites that charge you a ton of broker fees!

you can also do footwork and go to those small 3 4 story buildings sometimes you get lucky and they have vacancies

I have used Craigslist and found nice places without fees. You can also try the church newspapers. Home owners usually post an ad in the church papers to 1) help fund the church and 2) hope that they find a church going person to rent their apartment. It can't hurt. A few friends found great apartments in them - without a rental fee and a lot cheaper than market value. Mostly, people want a good person/family to rent to for a long time with less to worry about.

We found our apartment over craigslist that was the best place because we really didn't wana go througha agent

I live in aprivate 4 fam house, and one of the appts is available, don't know if you saw my post...its not one bedroom though, they used it as a computer room and one bed....
