I knew I could ask you ladies this and get tons of different opinions-- My understanding was that before we start TTC we should be off the pill for 3 months --to cleanse my body of it and let it get back to normal-- However my Dr. said it is not necessary that there is no medical proof and she suggested going off the pill and trying right away--- so my friend who had the same dr up until now (she switched since she moved) went to a new dr and he told her to wait 3 months because their is a higher instance of miscarriage and TWINS!!! Can anyone shed light on what they know/have been told/or dr has said-- The reason for the debate so to say--is if you take the stats on many of our friends and family many of them have gotten pregnant right after coming off and that led us to believe that chances are better--sounds stupid--I am following my dr advice but my friend isnt sure what to do-- Thoughts comments Thanks Laura

Re: 1 month vs 3 month
my doctor has also said the 3 month thing... but considering that i would like to have twins..... that whole one month concept is shedding a different light.......

Re: 1 month vs 3 month
I was not on the pill when I was ttc so I'm not 100% sure but all I know is that I myself would WANT that to be OUT of my body for at least 2 or 3 months before I TTC. JMO of course
I will ask hubby when he gets home and then post again.

Re: 1 month vs 3 month
I was told that's a perpetuated myth. Good thing b/c Luke was conceived the first month
Edited to qualify my comment a little further. I was told there is a very very low risk (like 1/4 of a percent!) chance of there being too much progestin still in your body. The reasons that they usually suggest waiting is b/c of establishing a normal cycle again. It seems to me from talking to alot of other pregnant women and now other mothers, that different OBs can say two totally different things and you will find that same disparity with what pediatricians say.

My dr. told me there was no reason to wait. I have not seen any studies that prove there are problems with babies conceived within 3 months of stopping the pill. I have a few friends who have conceived on the pill and even their kids are fine years later. Do what you feel most comfortable with.

Re: 1 month vs 3 month
I was told that was a myth based on the higher dosages of the pill back in the 60's and 70's. These days, the hormone levels are so low that that theory no longer makes sense. My dr. told me that as soon as you stop taking it, it's out of your system and there is no reason to wait. Also, there have been cases where women on the pill get pg and continue to take it because they don't realize they are pg -- with no ill effects for the baby. I say, do whatever makes you comfortable, but not to worry if it happens right away!

Re: 1 month vs 3 month
One of my friends told me that her dr suggested she be off the pill for 2 months before ttc. She said the reason they told her that was because its easier for them to figure out when you conceived.

Sue - that makes sense to me, too. I personally don't have any experience with the pill and TTC, but what Sue said (about her friend's experience) makes the most sense to me.
I think the doctors are advising patients to be off the pill for 3 months to better understand how your cycle responds when it's not being controlled by the pill. You need to establish a consistent ovulation pattern again, and that may take awhile if you've been on the pill for many years (or it may not - but, you never know). Establishing a consistent ovulation pattern will help the doctors figure out when you may have conceived (and therefore calculate your due date more accurately).
