2 Dresses - Is this crazy? Need opinions, please!

Hi ladies! I need your opinions! Let me explain:

FH and I are having a swing themed wedding. We're going to have a live band who will play mostly swing music (with some more 'mainstream' music mixed in). We're also going to hire dance instructors to teach our guests the basic swing moves. FH has been swing dancing for a few years now and has taught me a bit (he's much better than me!). We're planning on taking a whole bunch of lessons before the wedding so we can get really good! Our wedding song will actually be two songs, a slow one, 'A Kiss to Build a Dream On,' and then it will change to a fast swing song, 'Sing, Sing, Sing.'

I'm thinking that there is no way I will be able to swing dance in my wedding gown! I could have it made shorter, I guess, but I think that will ruin the look of it! I'm also thinking that I may look weird dancing like that in a gown, veil and tiara. (Plus, it's strapless, and I'm afraid it may fall down - lol!) Soooo...I'm wondering if I should purchase a 2nd shorter dress just for our first dance. (I will be able to wear this dress many times, so it wouldn't be a waste of $.) Would that be weird?? FH thinks I should stay in the 2nd dress for the rest of the night, but I love my wedding gown, and only get to wear it for one night - so I want to be in it as much as possible!

What do you ladies think? Would changing into a different dress for our first dance be completely crazy??? Help!

I don't think it's crazy.

Someone onhere is having a dress made and the concept could work for you (not the exact same dress, just the theory). It's a full ball gown skirt that can be removed to reveal a shorter, sexier dress. Maybe you could try something like that? Then after the first dances, you could put the full skirt back on?

I had a friend do a swing dance for her first dance. Her dress was pretty full, lots of layers of tulle if I remember correctly, and it worked great! She looked amazing in that dress, flying all over the dance floor! Of course, certain moves will be impossible...flips in a strapless gown? Probably not a good idea.

I don't think you would have to change dresses. Since you're planning to take dance lessons, why not explain the situation to the instructor and have him/her tailor the moves you learn?

I'm just not sure how 'swingable' my wedding gown is. I can move pretty well in it, it's not very heavy, but I didn't swing dance in the store or anything! (The dress was too big and had to be clipped in the back, I was afraid that moving too much would make it fall off!) It has a modified A-line skirt (more fitted than a regular A-line). Now I'm wondering if I should have gotten more of a ball gown dress, but I just didn't feel comfortable in them.

Well, I guess I'll talk to my seamstress (my dress needs to be taken in a lot) and the dance instructors to see what they think. Maybe I can dance in my dress, but if not - I'll get an awesome swing dress!
