20 lbs in 4 months?

Ok Ladies and Gents
I need to shed 20 lbs or 4 inches from my waist in 4 months, is it possible?
Anybody ever lost this much in this short amount of time?
What should I do to take it off? Diet? Exercise? Both?
And what kind of exercise? Help!!!

It can absolutely be done! The first few pounds will be pretty easy to lose, but as you get closer to your target weight, you'll need to work harder.
You'll definately need to not only watch what you eat, but also exercise too. Do 30 minutes of cardio or more 5 days a week if you can, and don't forget to do weights too. This is VERY important. The more muscle you have, the more calories your body will burn at rest. No lifting like a girly either! You have to really feel those last few reps - they have to be very very hard to complete.

I could write a whole book on what you should do, but instead I'll let you just ask me questions if you want.
Pick up a copy of Muscle and Fitness Hers too - you'll find a lot of good advice in there.

Now get to work!

Some studies show that it's better to work out first thing in the morning on an empty stomach - you burn more fat that way. But for me, it's better to work out right after work - I'm not a morning person AND there's no way that I could workout on an empty stomach!

I'd say just do what's best for you. Just make sure that whatever it is that you do you put all your effort into it. And clean up your eating - if you spend all that time in the gym but your diet stinks, you're just wasting your time....

If you drink any sugary drinks - stop. Drink water.
Cut back on carbs and switch to whole grains, brown rice, high fiber foods, lots of veggies and good clean protein (chicken, fish, eggs). Try to eat low fat if you can.

Get a tape measure and take your measurements. Track them on a weekly basis to see how your progress is going. Don't worry about the scale!

Good luck!

Re: 20 lbs in 4 months?

You can definately do it! I lost 15 pounds in 6 but wasn't too strict about it. If you are strict with diet and exercise for 4 months straight you will definately be able to lose 20. The best way to quickly lose weight is to lose the carbs , do lots of cardio, up your protein intake and drink lots of water. This however is a quick fix. So once you start eating carbs again, prepare to see the weight come back. Try running on the tread mill or an ellpitical climber at the gym, to lose around your mid section try doing crunches everynight. Also try not to eat after a certain time like 2 hours before you go to bed. Hope all works out for you

Have you tried Body for LIfe? Totally worked for me!! 12-week program. You work out and watch what you eat 6 days/week and then rest on the 7th day. Alternate days 20 minutes of cardio on M, W & F, weight lifting on T, T and S (one day upper body and the next time you weight train do lower body) Sunday is your free day (although you can modifiy this, I'd rather have Saturday my free day)

Diet is six small meals every 2.5 to 3 hours--one portion protein, one portion quality carbs and don't forget to add vegetables whenever you can. For example breakfast was two egg whites on whole wheat toast, mid-morning cottage cheese with melon, lunch tuna with lettuce and tomato on whole wheat, mid-afternoon Balance bar, dinner piece of broiled or grilled chicken, beef or fish, baked potato (the size of your fist, with NO butter) or brown rice and a green vegetable. I usually couldn't fit in that last snack at the end of the day. and don't forget lots of water.

The book goes into more detail with sample menus and sample excercises.

It's soooooo worth it and can totally be done. When I was really into it, I felt and looked the best I ever had. Good luck!

I need to do about the same.
I'm so bad at sticking to any type of plan though.
I just can't get started excercising, even though I used to!

I lost 22 pounds in 4 months by following Weight Watchers and exercising (step aerobics 3 times a week, weight training 3 times a week & rollerblading on the off days from the gym)! You can do it!!

Re: 20 lbs in 4 months?

Bridal boot camp. I am in this program at my gym and i love it. I is a count down to my wedding and a count down to the weight i want to be. I read about a program like this in shape mag. and i wanted to do it at my gym. I meet with a nutritionist once a month who tells me what to eat and plans a work out for me. From there i go to the gym follow her plan and bang the weight is flying off. I have never been so happy about the way i look until now. I have a picture of the body i want ( an old photo of me) on the frig so when ever i get the urge to eat some thing bad i look at the photo and reconsider. I only have 10-15 lbs left to go. Good luck and your goal can be reached.
