Sorry to crash but I need some help.. Ok here is the story.. FH is from a small town in Massachusetts. Me I am from LI (obv). My parents are helping out with a BIG portion of the wedding and FH parents are helping out some as well. My parents want the wedding to be BLACK TIE.. not that everyone needs to be in a tux but to make sure everyone is dress appropriately for Saturday night wedding. FH are TOTALLY against the BLACK TIE. and think it will defer some of their friends from coming..
OK here is the kicker this bride does not like the wording BLACK TIE OPTIONAL.. its a personal opinion just dont like the way it looks on an invitation....
I need help/opinions please!

I totally understand where you are coming from FH is from Maryland and I swear every wedding he gets invited to at home is black tie or black tie optional whereas people up here know regardless of dress code to come dress to the nines. I did not put black tie on our invites and i'm just hoping that the fact that LI is known for their weddings that his family and friends will come dressed appropriately. but ita with you black tie optional is stupid
ETA: we got invited to a wedding in maryland that was black tie optional and they had a buffet wedding and gave dunkin donuts munkins for favors

well Black Tie means Tuxes and super fancy dresses... so you might get people that wont attend because of that... I would definitely not have Shaun rent a tux just for someone elses wedding unless it was a sister or brother...
There is no other wording that will describe the kind of attire that youre looking for... besides Black Tie Optional
You didnt really ask a question so im not sure what resolution you were looking for this is just my opinion on the Black Tie thing

I'd put black tie personally. If people do not know what to wear and do not want to rent a tux (which is completely reasonable) tell them black or navy suit, white shirt, dark tie. I think every guy owns a black or navy suit...
My wedding is black tie and this is what we have told people who did not know what to do.

Like someone else said then they should put Formal Attire... Because unless you specifically tell them this or they call an ask they wont know that its ok to wear a regular suit

Honestly, on the day of your wedding you probably won't care about what anyone else is wearing. And regardless if you put black tie, there will be people wearing whatever they want.

We put 'black tie perferred'. I had a lot of people ask me what that meant and I just told the guys a suit and shirt and tie. For important men in my life (uncles and such) I asked for a black tie, black suit and a white shirt (if they had it). For the girls I told them they can wear a long dress if they want to but a cocktail dress was totally ok.
