2nd Opinion Needed? (LONG)

2nd Opinion Needed? (LONG)

Let me say that up until this point I have had complete faith in my OB/GYN.

For my past cycle, I charted and noticed that I did not ovulate, even though I got my period on the 35th day. I called my Dr. who ordered a preganacy test.

He said that if the PG test was negative he wanted to start me on Clomid. That was Tuesday.

Well between Tuesday and today I have done a lot of research and reading. I have discovered that Clomid can potentially have side effects and that some Dr's perscribe it too hastily. The reading I did recommeded doing a 'Clomid Challenge Test' (which should be taken on Day 3 of cycle) to verify lack of ovulation before begining treatment.

Well my Dr. called me today and said that he wanted to start me on Clomid. I said 'Wait - shouldn't I take the Clomid Challenge Test first?'. He said there is no such thing. So I explained to him what I read and I think he was annoyed with me because he said 'so do you want me to prescribe this for you or not'. I said no. To me, I only want to start a drug if I know there is no other option and I am sure this drug is what I need.

I am wondering - is this a case of me having a little bit of knowledge and it being dangerous??

I don't know who to talk to about this. My DH says whatever I want to do is fine. But I am not sure I am doing the right thing? Should I seek a second opinion?

I just feel like I am so alone in this!

honestly your doctor should have listened to ALL of your concerns and addressed each one. Saying 'Do you want me to prescribe or not' is a way of hushing you and bascially telling you not to question him!
I HIGHLY suggest that you continue to chart and call your insurance for a fertility specialist in your area. or ask around here for suggestions. Clomid is a wonderful drug that has helped many women, but it has also has side effects and there are women who never get pg on it too. You need to be informed before putting anything into your body. your doctor should have been happy that you have done research and care enough about your body that you looked into various opinions.
My advise: find a new doctor

I have no knoweldge of the subject so I cant offer any advice but I hope things work out and you get some good direction even if it is getting a second opinion. It is your health you are talking about and second opinions never hurt.

how frustrating!!!

I don't know much about Clomid, but I do know that when I went of the pill, my doctor asked me to take the ovulation predictor tests to see if 'I was working' . He told me to do it for 4 months and report back. He said if things looked 'off' we would consider Clomid. So he wasn't going to jump into it.

We weren't TTC so I just never took the tests...six months later I conceived...I think I would get a second opinion. I am not big on drugs....

I agree with Michele. You must have FULL confidence in your dr.
I just switched to an RE that I really like after having a few doubts about my ob/gyn.
I'm currently looking for a new ob/gyn and I wish I had done it sooner!

I definitely think you should get a second opinion, maybe switch OBs, or even see a infertility specialist. I totally agree with you - with all of the resources and research tools we have at our disposal today, there is NO REASON for you not to look into this further and be more well-informed about a drug and potential side effects to your body. Listen to your instincts...so far, they have served you well! Good luck!

GOOD FOR YOU!!! women need to start listening to their inner voice and your voice is saying , NO I don't want to take this medication unless I absolutely have to.

Your doctor sounds too quick with writing out that prescription and I suggest you find a doctor who will do a complete work-up on you before handing you a prescription.

Me and hubby were trying for 14 months and 3 doctors later who had NO IDEA what was wrong with me because everything 'looked' normal and I insisted on getting a sonogram in the office that day and the doctor reluctantly gave me one and LOW and behold I had Fibroid Tumors!!! after 2 other doctors said I was fine.!!! Doctor's are human just like everyone else so go with your gut and good luck!!

Second opinion indeed sweetie, b/c these dr's are so quick to brush off a woman's concern, when my gf who went thru IVF questioned the dr (male) his response was the same, she left and found someone else. It is your body you have to take the meds, do what makes you comfortable. These Drs are not the say all or know all of everything. SOmetimes you have to follow your gut.

I have some experience with this situation, but non with Clomid specifically.
I think you mentioned that you have PCOS?
If so, there are MANY avenues to be explored before turning to Clomid, and I think your doctor should have allowed you to try them or at least consider them, first. In my opinion (for what it's worth, which isn't a hell of a lot), you should seek a second opinion.

I'll be thinking about you...
