35mm or medium format?

my knowledge is limited and i know there are people on these boards that know more...that being said...my dad used to shoot photography and what i've gathered from him is that medium format is used for professional portraits and typically used by wedding photographers while 35mm is more for snapshots, to capture moments quickly, maybe by a photojournalist.

that's my quick description for you till somone gives you a better one!!!
