How can I occupy my guests (especially out-of-towners) for the 3hrs of 'down' time between my ceremony and reception on a Saturday in August? The church and reception are only 10 minutes from each other in Brooklyn with or without traffic. I don''''t want people standing around in the heat. I don''''t have lots of money to burn either. Please help!

3hrs to burn between ceremony and reception!
Let them fend for themselves. THey should be able to find something to keep themselves busy
i think maybe you should plan something for them to do.. like do you have a relative that lives close by.. maybe you could have people go over there for maybe some coffee.. thats a long time to have people hanging around all dressed up.. maybe you could ask the hall to serve champagne and strawberries to your guests if they arrive early, tell them they may start to arrive about and hour early then you only have to figure two hours...

I have three hours as well
I have been in the situation many times myself and I have always found something to do. There is nothing you can do about it. I feel bad but that is how things seem to have worked out.
People can go to a dinner for coffee, go back home or to the hotel and freshen up or go to a bar for a drink.
If you are really concerned you can see if a family member who lives near by will offer to host something...maybe wine and cheese. My FMIL is hosting a wine and cheese at a sonference room in the nearby hotel.

See if someone local can host out-of-towners for the time in between. If so, I`d suggest you supply some snacks and drinks but I don`t think you have to overdo it, maybe even just non-alcoholic drinks, iced tea, fruit & cheese platter. If it`s going to be an August afternoon, people will just want to be someplace to stay cool and relax. If someone cannot host it, you can suggest a list of some local places they can cool their heels. If they are staying over at a hotel, the lounge there is a great suggestion to start with.
Best wishes

We have 3 hrs in between too...
We're not worrying about it. I'm sure my FI family will have some kind of coffee and cake in between for the people that don't live nearby.
