I think it depends what the hall offers you. Im getting married at Jericho Terrace. My cocktail hour is from 6-7, then from 7-12 is the reception.

Re: 5 hour reception...
That's what we are doing, we are having a Sunday Day wedding, I think more than that is too long for people. It always makes me sad when people leave a wedding before it's over because they are tired or bored

Re: 5 hour reception...
If its not too expensive, an extra hour at the end of the night can be really fun but only if you extend your band/dj for that hour too. The older folks tend to leave earlier and the real party starts after that. We couldnt' afford an extra hour and I dont think its necessary but it can be lots of fun.PS: If you go this route, make sure to tell your guests there is an extra hour - most people wont know.

Re: 5 hour reception...
mine is 6-7 cocktail hour and 7-11 reception. But my venue has an hour after for jazz and cigars and brandy - so I am including that in the invite so people know that there will be an additional hour if they'd like to stay.

Re: 5 hour reception...
We're doing 6 hours also. 6-7 cocktail hour and reception from 7-12. The only reason we're doing it this way is because my FH's father asked for it and our reception hall is giving us the extra hour for free. We probably would not have spent the extra money, if they hadn't thrown it in.

Re: 5 hour reception...
We are doing 6 1/2 hours. We are having pre-cocktail hour 5:30 - 6 p.m.; cocktail hour 6 - 7 p.m. and reception 7 - 12 midnight. We are having Vinesse hour at the reception, that is why we are having a 6 1/2 hour reception.
