Unbelievable. I have a 2002 Nissan Altima SEV6 which I love. I drive 450 miles a week to work from Mineola to Stamford CT . my car has been paid off for 2 years now. I was trying to get another year out of it. It has 125,000 miles.
I heard this horrible knocking sound coming from the engine and just knew it wasn't going to be good. Yeah, I need a new engine for a mere $9,600 amongst other things.
So car shopping it is for me tonight, Friday,Sunday and Monday. UGGGHHH so wasn't prepared for this expense so close to the wedding.
Thanks for the vent session.
Any suggestions on what type of car to buy? New only, I never have luck with preowned cars.

I would get a Hyundai - or any vehicle that has a 10 yr - 100,000 mile warranty.
That would be your best bet for the amount of driving you do!!!

Sorry Andrea. I have a 2001 suzuki xl-7 and it has given me no problems. love it. but it's an suv and if you are driving a lot you will want something with better gas mileage I am guessing?
I don't think you can go wrong with a civic or an accord... i know FH's grandparents got a camry last year and his parents say it's super UNcomfortable ... drives well but for them, not as good as the caddy they are used to

I love my Saturn and it gets great gas mileage. . . and they are pretty reasonably priced.

honda's are really good if you put a lot of mileage on your car. If you take care of them, they are good for 200k plus!!

I say buy a HONDA, DH works for them so i am kinda bias, lol
but we also owned several honda and they last really long and are usually worth what you spend.
I currently drive a 2007 CRV
ETA: my 1st car was a 1993 honda civic, i had it for 5 yrs and it had 165,000 miles on it, then someone stole it bc i guess they liked it better then me, lol
Dh is looking into getting the honda fit

i was just going to say that honda's i heard are great with mileage if you take care of your car. FBIL and his wife have always bought hondas and LOVE them.

I always drove an Nissan and my first one lasted over 15 years -- but I did not drive that far everyday but I did put close to 200,000 miles on it.
Now we have an accord and have done well with it.
So I suggest a Honda or another Nissan.

i have a sebring 2005 though and I want the new one SOOOO bad. I said once I finish my masters program and hopefully get a job teaching i will buy myself a new sebring haha that is probably going to be 2010 though

Sorry to crash but FH used to have a similar commute-driving to NJ everyday. He bought a Honda and got a great deal on an extended warranty to 120,000 miles. He swears by his car and plans on driving it into the ground (although his commute is much shorter now).

that's a very good question! I think my only answer is b/c I make more money coming here then I did when I worked in Queens and Long Island. I'm trying to get a position in LIC but we'll see.
Thanks for all your help ladies. I want a practical car for good mileage but dont' want anything too small b/c I drive on I-95 everyday and am afraid of all the trailers.

Hondas are amazing! my first car was an Acura Legend, I drove that car until I had almost 200,000 miles and I decided to get a Jetta which was the WORST car ever!! I had the Jetta for 4 years, after the warranty went up, I went back to Acura. I now have a 2006 Acura TSX and I love it!!! Great car, I really love it!

I was considering the HOnda or Saturn....I took very good care of my car b/c I new I wanted to keep it. I got the oil changed every 6 -7 weeks and expected it to last but I just don't have great luck.
Now of course that I've had a car that had everything, I want everything.

oh andrea, i'm so sorry!!!
both victor and i have hyundais. i have the elantra, and he has the sonata, which is a little bigger than the altima. they're so affordable and drive great. victor's had his for over a year and has not had a single problem with them. we plan on upgrading later this year or next year to a hyundai santa fe. we're fans of hyundai, and the warranty can't be beat!
