a bit upset

a bit upset

First, yesterday FH was on the phone to his best man who lives overseas. He's known for a year that we were getting married. He's known for a year he's the best man. Now he's telling FH that it 'looks a bit dodgey' that he and his girlfriend are coming to the wedding!!!
HELLO YOU'RE THE BEST MAN! He told FH that he is looking to buy a house and wants to get married himself in a year or two. Hey that's great. But that's also not fair to commit yourself a year ago and now tell us you might not be able to make it???? As for money issue, we are almost sure that they can stay with a friend of ours. So no hotel cost. Then he's asking for info about rental houses. Hello did we not tell you a friend is offering a room in his house for you? WTF? So what - when he gets married are we expected to fly over for his wedding??? We already have 2 to go to in Ireland in November AND December of 2004.

Then my father tells me last night that the Knights of Columbus lounge we were going to rent to use as a rehursal dinner (buffet style) may not be available now. Seems that another couple used it on a Friday night. They dind't close it off for the group so it was already sort of busy by the time they got there. They said it was a party of 20. WEll 20 more showed up. The kitchen was understaffed by then and the bartender was runnign around like mad serving all these people. So the manager of the lounge said no more rehursal parties. This is AFTER we were told we could have one. Ours would be on a Thursday and we will limit it and just not invite others. I'm so upset now, FH didn't want to have a sit down dinner - our rehursal is 7:45pm as it is anyway and my bridesmaids dont' live on LI and two of them plan on going home that night so they can't stay late for a sit down meal. Taht's why a buffet was perfect, some could eat and some could just have a drink and leave if they had to or wanted to.

I'm more upset about the best man. I mean what the hell. It's just so rude to all of a sudden change your mind 5 months beforehand. He knew for a damn year about it and all of a sudden now he has to buy the house and get married? OK maybe that's a low shot but really. There's a thing called budgeting, we've had to do it for a year now, he should try it.

Geez that's annoying. Was your BM always such a flake? We have a GM like that - right now he's in Japan (we think) and we don't even know if he's coming...

I would tell your FI to consider getting another BM and demote this guy to GM, if that. I mean, really, you're supposed to be the best friend, there are other things the BM is supposed to do and can you trust this guy to do them?

Good luck!

That's so rude... I'm sorry that you have to be going through this so close to your wedding date... I think you guys should just find a new BM.. a bit dodgey usually means that it's pretty much a no.. I just don't understand why he couldn't tell you this sooner!

What a nerve! It always stuns me when someone pulls something like your BM is doing. You are definitely better off finding a new best man. Good luck with everything.

Re: a bit upset

thanks everyone

i just feel bad b/c i know fh is homesick. one friend just bought a house upstate. he calls home regularly and tells fh all the gossip and stuff. another guy just moved back home for a few months. he plans on coming back here in march but who knows. so having alot of his friends from home means alot to him. i hope they realize this. at least we're going home next christmas but still. would be nice if a few can make it for the wedding for his sake.

his own godfather isn't even coming. that's another story. lol

i'm sorry!!
that's terrible!
i think your Fh should talk to his best man and explain that he has an important role in the wedding as BM and he thought he understood that when he accepted the psotion, but if he's not able to live up to the responsibility, the two of you can find someone else to fill his place, but that you can't sit around waiting to see what he decides! it's not fair for the two of you to be sitting around waiting for him to decide what to do with his life!
personally, i would give him a call and let him know that he's been removed from the wedding party....i would be really annoyed...but i guess he deserves a chance to make his decision.
this is a tough one!!!

Re: a bit upset

I have no advice about the Best Man thing, just a hug. (okay, 2)

As far as the dinner thing, there are lots of buffet restaurants you could go to. I don't know where in Long Island you are, but in Garden City there is a place on Stewart Ave, near Roosevelt Field Mall, called INternational BUffet. I can get you info if you want... we had our e-party there. You can even reserve space for your r-dinner if you want to. FM me if you want more info. Or if that's not near where you want to be, check the yellow pages, or ask around for a buffet nearby.

Good luck!!

Re: a bit upset

I know! She has three kids, so I'm trying to be sensitive that surely they are her day to day focus as opposed to my wedding but I almost flipped out!! Anyway, I did say to her, I guess they wouldn't get to party too much!!! LOL!

See, that I can understand.
It's a circumstance you can't control.

I just am not happy with the situation.
