A check I wrote was stolen...should I be freaking out?

So I have never been in this situation before...I am at a loss so ladies help me out

I just got a call from the girl that does my nails. The salon was robbed the night I had my nails done. My check along with others and their cash was all taken. So somewhere out there, is my check (made out to salon's name - not an individual's name).

WFT do I do? Call the bank and stop payment? Close the checking account?????

you can put a stop payment on it; no need to freak out unless it was 1. made out to cash or 2. blank. Banks wouldn't let a random person cash a salon's check without the account number.

I honestly would not worry about it. I would just watch your checking account daily for a week or two. If you like you could even call the bank & ask what they advise. I don't think anything will be done with your check. I am sure they threw it away.

i heard that people can use your name, address and account#/routing # from your actual check - im not sure exactly how they can use this info but i know that they can use it to do stuff - i think thats why they say not to put an address on your check?

something similar happened to me. I called my bank and explained, I proceeded to stop payment on my check and my bank cancelled at no charge.
Chances are this check cannot be cashed anyway since it was made outt o your salon.

I would stop payment on the check. They can't do anything with it anyway since it was made out to the salon, but I would do it just in case.

I can't get to my branch until after work, so I will call tomorrow With all the identity theft nowadays, I wasn't sure what would happen if they had the routing/account numbers

eventhough you put the salons name as the pay to order the teller that receives that check may miss the pay to order and just deposit it.. if that does happen the system will not notice it unless is over $2000 (if its over $2000.00 it usually requires a review the next business day)

its unlikely but it can happen..

A person can use chemicals to wipe off the ink you wrote the check with and then write in whatever they want. That's why they sell those 'check safe' pens where the ink won't dissolve. The check number in the corner should still be there though.

ETA: Tell the salon that they have to reimburse you for the stop payment fee

just cancel the check as long as it was made out to a specific amt they cant get more than that

they can do something with the account numbers. they cant go to the bank and withdraw of course but they can pay bills online. i do online banking and all they require is the routing/checking numbers and the name. it doesnt matter if the name doesnt match the name on whatever bill their paying.

i would close the account. There are many things that they can do with your routing & acct number. If you dont want to close your account, stop all automatic debits on your account, (bill payments, etc.) and you can let your bank know that all automatic debits that are attempted on your account are unauthorized. any attempts made will not go through.

I agree I would close the account also. This person now has your account number and these days half of the tellers don't ask me for id when I make a withdrawal from my account so basically all you need is the account number.
