A Friday Story...

A Friday Story...

Long story short, I pretty much spent my savings last year on a mac book pro that I have wanted forever. My one year warranty just expired. This week I was home sick and finally got on it to finalize all the addresses in the excel file I started. Our Save the Date person (Who is awesome by the way) then let me know the format that she needs and it was a word document, no abbreviations, etc. You know the deal... So I spent hours and hours earlier this week (and I have to say this has been the part of planning I've enjoyed the least so far- collecting these addresses and formatting them) and I was 90% complete. The next morning I collected the remaining addresses and I was working on the document and then checked work email. Next thing you know, my barely used (like 10 files on it) computer freezes. I don't think much of it because I've saved everything. 'Apple, option , escape' does not work (the control alt delete for macs) and so I shut down. Well that would be the last time I ever saw the desktop of my computer. It wouldn't turn on past the apple screen. Like hours of me staring at the screen praying it would go back to normal, okay and maybe cursing it a bit. But I held hope. lol

Soooo... I brought my computer into work the next day because naturally I made an emergency appointment at the Apple store. An awesome guy I work with offered to check it out himself (he said if you go to Apple they won't back up your files if they can recover them and he would). Again there was hope! I got word last night that he had recovered my files! His exact email, 'The wedding is back on!' Well today he brought over my files (still no macbook pro though) and I loaded them onto my work computer. Every single file is back, EXCEPT the two files I worked on last...the excel file of addresses and the word document of formatted addresses for Save the Dates. They are no where to be found. Back to square one.

Surprisingly enough, I'm in pretty good spirits about it. You can't help but scratch your head, laugh , look up and go 'REALLY LIFE? REALLY?'

Happy Friday everyone. lol

Oh man that's horrible!! Have you considered keeping the addresses on a site like The Knot or another wedding site? Not sure if you can convert it to a word doc or if its only excel. It's definitely worth a look. Good luck

Aww, sorry that happened! At least you got the rest of your files back...

(To everyone:) Consider uploading important files like that to google docs periodically or uploading them to dropbox. Or even just emailing them to yourself. That way they're stored in the cloud and you can recover them even if your computer goes up in flames.

Seriously!! I'm like the biggest advocate of this but of course with this I had only been working on it for 2 days and I'm thinking I have a brand new mac it's fine. I'm the person with externals, thumb drives, google docs, etc. Go figure.

Re: A Friday Story...

My FH had the same problem a couple of years ago with his mac Laptop. He closed it to hard and somehow damaged the hard drive. I took it in to work and got back some of files, but not all of them. We also had to replace the hard drive itself so anything that didnt get recovered was lost.

He was okay with it, the stuff that was lost wasn't a big deal to him. Mostly pictures, but they were also on FB or other things like a thumb drive.

After that, he went out and got the Time capsule. Its made by Apple and will automatically back up your hard drive wirelessly ( also doubles as a wireless print server so you dont have to connect your laptop to your printer to print) So now if anything ever happens again to his laptop everything is backed up on this hard drive and easily obtained if needed.
