A little confused re: marriage license

I have seen two different web sites that describe what is needed for a marriage license and they are not the same. One is for NY State and the other is for NY city. Since I'm from Boston (and a little clueless), does LI count as NY City? or is it NY State? And, we were planning to stop right over the border of CT to get our license. If we stopped in Westchester County, is the license we get there valid for Long Island? Does anyone know what we need if we stop in Westchester?

LI is NY State. It is not one of the 5 boroughs. You simply have to let the people in Westchester know where you are getting married. We got our marriage license in the Town of North Hempstead, but got married in The Town of Hempstead. Makes no difference.

Re: A little confused re: marriage license

no matter where you are in NYS the things you need for your marriage license are

1) Birth certificate with raised seal

2) photo identification such as driver's license, military id, passport

certificate is valid and can be used 24 hours after its issued and expires in 60 days.

ETA: and the license is valid anywhere in NYS

Do you know if there's a web site that lists the city offices where I can apply? Should we just drive around Westchester until we see a town hall? Also, one site said $35 and the other said $40. And it has to be a certified check? Why do I feel like I'm going to screw this up!

I dont think you need the birth cert if you get the license in the city. I have friends who got their license in the city even if they were getting married outside the city and didnt need their birth cert

I went to City Hall downtown NYC and all we needed was NYS ID and a money order for $35 made payable to City Clerk. HTH
