Michi - is it someone you are romantic with? If so, I think it is a cool gift but if just a friend, it kind of has some connotations (not a bad thing, unless that is not what you are looking to do.)

eh...i think that is a risky gift...either he will love it or dread it..I say ask him silly questions about massages.....feel him out on what he thinks about it...then make a decision..

How about this instead? Sign the both of you up for massage classes? That way, instead of a stranger giving him a massage, you can give each other massages instead.
