We are moving, and I have a bunch of books I don't want anymore - I am so against throwing away books though - is there a place I can donate them?

I didn't know about Strand bookstore!
I threw out tons of books the last time I moved b/c I couldn't find ANYWHERE that would take them - libraries, nonprofits, etc.
If anyone finds anywhere, I'd love to know, too, for future reference.

Yes, Barely Bent Books in RVC pays you for books that you have that they may want....
Also, Mercy Medical Center in RVC takes books for the waiting rooms, patients, etc.
Also, I am sure any non-profit (shelters, Ronald McDonald House, etc.) would take them too!

Re: A place to donate unwanted books?
I know a teacher in my building collects books that people no longer want and sends them to troops who are stationed overseas.
If you want to get them to me, I can make sure she gets them....

Called and asked around... They don't just take any books. Tried to donate them to prisons through nonprofits as well, but they only take certain books, etc. They basically all said no. You can try calling to see what they say, though.

Re: A place to donate unwanted books?
Try your library and see. Some accept donations and some do not, some will with limitations. It usually depends on the condition of the books and how current they are. They may also be looking just for certain subjects/current bestsellers, etc. I'm not saying this is you, but a lot of times people donate old, crappy books that are outdated (like reference books that are 20 years old) or gross (moldy, etc.) or they might have limited space and be unable to accept donations (yes, I'm speaking as a librarian )
Someone I know also donates books to our troops overseas.. I think you might have to pay for shipping
Also you can try nursing homes, halfway homes, etc.

Re: A place to donate unwanted books?
You can donate them to the Martin Luther King, Jr. center in Wyandance. It's affiliated with Good Samaritan Hospital and they take all types of used things like books and toys. I would definitely try them. If you search for Catholic Health Services or Good Samaritan Hospital, they should have the number. I have it at work, but I won't be in until Wednesday.
