A question for Maltese owners....

A question for Maltese owners....

Does anyone have a groomer they like who cuts their Malt's hair? I like Scooby's shaggy look, and he just would not tolerate a clip or rubber band in his topknot. I took him to Pet Menu in Flushing on Northern Blvd to have his nails trimmed and the woman said she could cut his top hair for me. She gave him a straight across scissor cut. Everyone says it's a poodle look, not a Malt look. I don't like it either.

Does anyone cut their own Malt's hair? Do you think a thinning shears would work better than a straight scissors if I tried it myself next time? They are kind of expensive and all come in a sealed plastic package so I can't try it out and return it if it doesn't work right.

Thanks,
Mary

I don't have a dog, but even harder to find a good groomer for - I have a persian cat who needs grooming ever 3-6 months - but few groomers will groom a cat and fewer are even good at it.

There is a place I use called the Pet Wellness Center - they are in Plainview on the LIE service road. They are fabulous. I used to work nearby and I'd drop my cat off in the morning before work and for like $10 extra they'd throw in a 'play time' for my cat so that he wouldn't be stuck in a cage all day until I could pick him up after work. The place is very clean too which I really like. Give them a call and see what they can do for your doggie.

Thank you so very much. I will be out that way today, in fact. I just may stop in if I have the time. If not, I will definitely phone them.
I really appreciate the information.

I have a Maltese, but my groomer does it out of her home and doesn't accept anyone new. Good luck finding someone. Just keep searching until you find a place you are happy with.

Re: A question for Maltese owners....

Mrs. Ptobe - I stopped in at the Pet center you recommended. I liked what I say, but as you know, til they actually do a good job with your pet, you are still anxious. I would speak with the groomer first, but I would have to leave him there 2 1/2 hours. I'm worried what will happen in that time. I have visions of him being worked on for 15 - 30 min. and the rest of the time him sitting in a cage crying. I know this is probably what all places are like, unless I find one that lets me stay with him the whole time.

Cindy, you are very lucky to have someone like that. If she ever says she's ready for new clients, please let me know.
Since no one else responded, maybe you can help me further. I don't know what questions or requests to make of a groomer. Can you tell me what services she does for your dog? Is your Malt in a long coat? How does she cut his/her hair? Does she use a thinner so it's not a straight scissor cut? Any advice you can give me is better than I know now. LOL!

Thanks so much.

Re: A question for Maltese owners....

Mary - If you want to keep her hair on the shorter side, just ask for a puppy cut. I don't bring her as often as I should because she is a little older now and doesn't like to go. Right now her hair is on the long side. I don't know anything about the scissors so I can't help you there. I will tell you, if you are not comfortable where you do bring your dog, keep searching. I have heard some horror stories of places. Have you thought of one of those mobile groomers that do it in your driveway? Lots of luck in your search.

I've recently started to think of that also. Do I just look in the phonebook for one? I've only heard of them but never actually seen one.

Thanks.

I am not sure where you live but I use a wonderful girl in Whitestone. She works in her house. She has a dog and few cats. I usually drop my yorkie off and she gives him a bath and haircut and I pick him up 1-2 hours later. And if i am a little late he plays with her dog. If you want her phone number FM me and i will pass it along to you. I have recommended her to a few people and everyone has been very happy with her
