My fmil was telling me about a wedding they went to recently Upstate. She said they had extra slices of the wedding cake in wax paper bags set on a table so the guests could take some home if they wanted to. It sounds like a cute idea if there was any cake left. Has anyone done or seen this before? Any ideas on where to get these types of 'bags' for the cake?

Ive never seen bags but Ive seen boxes. Instead of eating a slice, you get a box with the slice to take home (presuming the hall served another sort of dessert).
I never looked into it but I know it was featured in one of last years Martha Stewarts.

I went to a wedding once where you were given the wedding cake to take home - we weren't served cake at the reception?
Our catering hall said they were not allowed to let food leave the premisis(sp?). I dont know if that was bs or not and if it applies to all catering halls.
I think it's a nice idea though. Some people don't want cake right after a big meal but would like to have some wedding cake when they get home.

I love this idea ... sooo much food at the reception, but I'm always in the mood for a late night snack. I like the idea of a thank you on the way out ... box them, attach a note and you're done. The hall should be more than happy to accomodate you, since it's less work than serving them, I'd think.
Good luck!

I used to work in catering- you are really not supposed to let extra food leave the site unless you have insurance for it. If someone left their food in car for 2 weeks, then ate it, and then got sick, the catering facility is responsible. I know this is unlikely, but people do sick things for $.
Also, it's a royal pain to do this- so many facilities refuse.

Re: A Question I have not seen yet...
the whole thing about bringing wedding cake home started a long time ago. Unmarried girls would get a piece of cake to put under their pillow that night and it was said that they would dream of their future groom.
Sounds a little messy if you ask me...but maybe when it started, they didnt have 4-tiered cakes with whipped cream!!
You really should check with the hall to see if they allow food to be taken out.
Good Luck and heres to cake under your pillow!~

I think the whole not allowed to let food leave is b-s. You are allowed to take doggy bags from restaurants.

That is a cute idea.
My hall let me take the extra desserts from the vienesse home. We gave it out at our brunch the next morning.
Also, at my brother's wedding, we had a good laugh. One of my brother's friends who came solo (but was suppose to have a date - she didn't show) asked for a dinner to go! It was too funny to see him leaving with a tin of food...I heard he even asked for the cake to be wrapped. Now, I have seen people order the dinner and eat it but not ask to tak it home! It was too funny.

Re: A Question I have not seen yet...
At my wedding we served the cake provided by the hall, but keeping with our West Indian/Caribbean tradition we served the delicious fruit cake/black cake, we served them in decorative bags. I don't think a lot of our guest took it home, they ate it immediately
Here is a pix of it

I've never heard of it but it's a great idea just as long as I get a good portion to take home, after all it is MY wedding cake LOL

I did the same thing as Shamma; however, mine was in a box. A box was placed at each table setting. The cake the hall made was served to our guest.
