a silly question of the day.

Original post by ssdbk

just thought I'd ask a silly question and see what people were told about their parent's weddings.

THE QUESTION--Where did your parents or step-parents or any other older people who are significant to you GET MARRIED?

(hoping that if your parents aren't married, you still have someone in your family with a good story to tell).

OK---Here's mine:

My parents were married at a catering hall in The Bronx called the Paradeen Manor but it was later knocked down when they built a huge road (I think the road is the Cross Bronx Expressway).

Other facts: My mom says that engagement announcements and printed menus were not done in her day. Then I found BOTH of those from her wedding!! Also, she had black and white photos because color was very new and expensive at the time and now she thinks it is funny that we all WANT black and white!!!!!

I'm getting married in the same church my parents got married in. Their reception was in a Chinese banquet hall on Canal and Bowery. Since they got married, the place has closed down and switched owners about 20 times!

Re: a silly question of the day.

My parents were set to get married at a place 27 years ago in Brooklyn. 3 months before the wedding, with invitations already out and everything booked, the place closed down!! Had to reschedule everything.

The funny story I remember is that 'back then' their whole wedding cost them $3,900 which was crazy. Mom tells this story of how they're at the food tasting and my grandfather is arguing with them that he'll 'pay the extra 75 cents per person for filet mignon instead of prime rib!' lol If only...

My parents got married at a local church in NJ, then had their reception at my grandparent's house. My uncles offered to pay for a big wedding for them, but my mom refused.

I like this thread.

My parent's were married 39 years ago at Holy Trinity RC Church in Coytesville (Fort Lee), NJ. Their reception was at a restaurant called the Coach House - the last time I drove by it (year's ago) - it was a Charlie Brown's.

My parent's grew up across the street from each other and started 'dating' in eighth grade. My mom orginally liked my dad's best friend. Their wedding was planned for June of 67' but my Dad got drafted for the Vietnam war-so they moved the wedding to February. In April, he left for 2 years to go to war. My mom planned her wedding in 3 months. After the wedding my mom & dad went on their HM while both families went back to the houses and there was a huge block party-since they were across the street from each other. My Grandma still tells stories of how there were people sleeping under her dining room table and all over her house.

My parents got married in London (don’t remember the details like church or reception) 29years ago. She said she thought her wedding was so cool then ‘cos she had personalized napkins and matchbooks and color pictures!! Their album is actually very nice! Plus, she said she was still not sure that she wanted to marry him even as she walked down the aisle and that my dad kept saying it was okay if she didn’t want to go through with it. She wasn’t sure because being African, neither parents were there (they were back home) and my mom didn’t feel it was right.

Anyway, their parents refused to accept that they were married so they had to have a huge traditional wedding FIVE years later (with us in tow!!!) back home before they were considered married. Thank God mine is the day before! They celebrate their 30th anniversary next year but would not be having a huge party because of my wedding, they would just travel instead or at least that’s what my mom says now…I can see her right after my wedding telling my dad that she demands a party!!

My parents got married back home in the Philippines. They had a very short engagement, something like 6 months i think it was. They had a traditional catholic mass followed by a reception at my grandparents country club. They honeymooned in another island in the Philippines and were so bored out of there minds that they came home on the 4th day! My mom wanted to set up their new house instead of hang out on the beach!!! Those crazy kids!!!

My parents got married in Queens and had the reception at the Thatched Cottage in Huntington. My father's friends from the city had a tradition of stealing the bride the night of the wedding for awhile, so my parents snuck out of the reception... and stayed overnight at a hotel where noone knew where they were!!!! My father's friends never found them... and my brother was born nine months later... go mom and dad!!!

I'm so glad I asked. I was afraid no one would answer. I love these stories, especially the 1970s ones!!!!

My parents were married 41 years ago at St. Mary's in Woodside. Their reception was at the Villa Bianca on Northern Blvd. in Flushing (now the Reception House). Dinner cost $7.00 pp!
