A story for you... i thought i would share
For christmas, my mother and I got my grandmother this Digital picture frame. As we started to look through the pictures that we wanted to put on the frame, I got more and more emotional... As they were pictures of my Grandfather (the man I would consider my father figure)
And when we got to their wedding pictures, I couldnt help but want to share their story. Because, to me, it is the one thing that had me believing in those fairy tale weddings that end with happily after after...
My grandfathers father owned a maccaroni factory. He came off the boat from Italy, and the family was very wealthy...
My grandmother got a job there as a packer, which meant she would put the ronies in the boxes. She came from Puerto Rico when she was 12, and was very poor.
The first day my grandfather went tothe factory, he saw my grandmother, went up to her and said 'Im going to marry you'.
She turned around to him and said 'You dont know me. You dont like me'. and wouldnt talk to him.
For a few months he began to 'court' her, and she said, she agreed to go on the date with him because he was 'handsome'.
When it was brought to the attention to my grandfathers family, they told him they would not allow him to because, well, she was not Italian. She was also a 'half Breed', since she was mixed with other nationalities...
He continued to pick her up for their first date. And the next day, came to work with a tatoo, witha heart that said 'Elba' on it.
On that Valentines day, he gave my grandmother a refrigerator box. Inside that box was another box. Inside that one another one... over 50 wrapped boxes until the one final one. The engagement ring.
My grandfather was disowned by his family, and in that time it meant that they would give him none of the 'family fortune'. Which, to my grandparents, they didnt care.
My grandparents lived happily... until he was sick. With hardly anything except eachother. They were happy all the time. They played card games, went for walks, built things, and were eachothers best friends until he died...
They adored eachother. And that is something for me to hold on to...
So, when the going gets tough, I think what we all need to do... is strive for the best. And hold on to what we DO have. Because in the end... thats all that matters...
Just wanted to share that. When you say there is no such thing as the cinderella husband and wife THEY are the ideal example. It gives me something to hold on to... :)
