A wedding gift check bounced...UPDATE

how did you approach the situation?
TIA!

So I bit the bullet and told my friend and she was SO SORRY! She thought the check had cleared and it turns out it was bank error. She is sending a new check and all is good! She was happy that I said something.

We told MIL, since it was her friend. MIL mentioned it to her and her friend made up some excuse about bla bla bla and just sent us a new one.

depends who it is. If it was a friend I would just and lead with being concerned and giving them a heads because they are writing checks out of an account that can't cover them and yours probably isn't the only one. I would want to know!

One was my step sister so I told my step father who spoke to her about it. The other was a friend of my dad's, so I had him take care of it. The latter couple sent us another. I still feel bad my step sister had to pay the bounce charges!

Re: A wedding gift check bounced...

The only bounced check we got was from my MOH; the only reason why is Cablevision screwed up her payment.

Before I could approach her, she told me about it.

If it is a friend, I would approach them with an FYI; if it were a friend of your parents or DH's parents I would tell them and have them handle it.

ugh I thought all the annoying stuff stopped when planning was OVER!!!

Luckily it was just one check...but definitely not a fun topic to bring up with someone

Re: A wedding gift check bounced...

This happened to us and we just left it alone. We know she doesn't have any money so we didn't feel it was worth it to make things more akward. She knows she bounced it I'm sure. I was just angry because my bank also charged me $10 for it. So she gave us negative $10.

Re: A wedding gift check bounced...

Its my friend my HS/ slash college roommate for two years.

I was more than generous at all of her events bridal shower, bachlorette party (couldnt go at the last minute and still paid for the limo), wedding and her baby shower in October.

So I am going to say something....not for nothing but its like I have been more than generous over the years with people/her and am tired of shutting my mouth and getting screwed by people....just to keep the peace.....

not mad just like 'come on!'

Just getting a new one isn't a good idea since the person who wrote the check will get charged a bank fee (anywhere between $10-$25) for the bounced check. He or she will know you tried to cash the check, that it bounced, and that you just asked for another one. Awkward.

Right and I got charged a bank fee as well which in my opinion is rude and inconsiderate.

Re: A wedding gift check bounced...

This happened with us. It was one of my 2nd cousins. I had emailed her about it. She had told us there were bank problems where her bank was debiting everything twice that month - so for ex - her mtg got take out twice - so she asked for my address & said she would send us what we were intended to get. That was about 4 months ago & still NOTHING...AND we got charged $25 for the darn NSF check of hers. At this point I dont care about the wedding check - I just wish she would make good on the bounced check fee - both she & her husband have jobs & it seems really unfair that I who am unemployed should have to bear the financial brunt of their bounced check

ITA! You have to say something. Maybe it was just an accident.

If it's something that was done purposely though- how the hell do people have NO shame??? I would die if that happened to me!

Re: A wedding gift check bounced...

I feel your pain. My DH and I experienced the same thing. The guy that gave us the check didn't have the courtesy to call and say anything. He waited about a month and a half later till he saw my DH again, pulled him aside and apologize. He asked if he could give us a new check and he told him to deposit it quickly. He didn't even give extra for the bounced check fee. Good Luck, I hope the person gives you extra for your troubles.

Exactly I'd assume that the bounced check was just an accident. Call whoever wrote the check and say you just wanted to let them know that you tried to cash their wedding gift and the check bounced. Hopefully he/she will apologize and offer to send another check.

I fu feel u r close enough to say something then do so. Tell her u dont want to create more fees from bouncing it again on yoru side & her side.

I cant imagine if i had to deal with that. That so embarrassing.

we just kept quiet...sometimes things are better left unsaid.

Re: A wedding gift check bounced...

Luckily we didn't have any issues, but if we did I don't think I would have said anything because bottom line they know the checked bounced and they know you know the checked bounced.

I really never understood why your bank charges you when it was someone elses check.. they should charge that persons bank not you and yet its the banks that get the bail out, gotta love it!
