AA Brides - Jumping the Broom?

Are you jumping the broom on your wedding day, and if so during which part of the ceremony<

If not why?

Are you designing your broom or purchasing one?

I was just wondering what the tradition/symbolism behind this act is?
I don't know, and am always interested in learning about other cultures.
I feel silly for asking, but I am curious.

Re: AA Brides - Jumping the Broom?

Jumping the Broom is a ceremony that dates back to the 1600's derived from Africa.

In times of slavery in this country, AA couples were denied all rights including the right to be formally married and live together. Because they could not legally marry, they created their own ritual to honor their unions. So to make a public declaration of their love and committment, a man and a woman would literlally jump over a broom into matrimony.

The jumping of the broom is a symbol of sweeping away the old and welcoming the new. The straws of the broom represent family and the handle represents the Almighty God.

I knew that AA couples were denied marriage rights, and families were often split apart , but I had never learned of the broom ceremony before.
Thank you for the info!

I am choosing not to jump the broom.
I am however doing the unity candle.
I chose not to because it is almost expected that B/C I am black I would do this tradition. Besides my dress would hide the broom.

No, we're not. My family is Jamaican and no one's done that ever. They wouldn't know what the heck I was doing. Also, I'm having a Jewish ceremony, so it might be anticlimatic to jump a broom after breaking a glass. Unless we jump over the broom, unto the glass! Which might be dangerous.

Jumping the broom is a Black American custom not Caribbean, thats why they haven't heard of it. My FI is Haitain and had no clue what the tradition was. We are jumping the broom at the reception hall. When they announce us for the for the first time our moms will put the broom down for us.

Re: AA Brides - Jumping the Broom?

Ok Ladies, thanks for the posts but to clear the air...the tradition is representative of ancestral slaves originating from Africa who were brought directly to America and as I stated not allowed all of the rights and privileges as others....some African Americans hence the name came straight from Africa to the southern states and others were dropped off in parts of England, Spain, South America, and the Caribbean. That is why 'jumping the broom' is not know throughout the 'island'. We all share a little African culture one way or another.

We plan on jumping the broom. FH wants to do it. My family is Haitian, so it's not somthing I would have said I had to have. I have always seen it done at the church just before the bride and groom walk down the aisle after being announced.

When I read AA, I thought 'jumping the broom' was part of the Alchoholics Anonymous 12-step program!!!!!!!

All kidding aside, I like the symbolism in the idea...very touching.
