I am sending out STD cards to our guests since many of them are traveling to LI for the wedding. But I am having an issue cutting down our guest list. Is it unheard to place somewhere on the STD card that if you are sure you can't make it to let us know then... instead of waiting until the actual invitations go out? Is that rude?

Re: ? about STD cards...
I wouldnt Do that. Im sending my STD cards to people who are definates and if I plan on inviting one person who is friends with someone on the b list neither one will get a STD!

I don't think you should ask people to say they definitely won't be coming to your wedding. You are just asking them to keep the date in mind at this point, the invite is when they have to decide. In all likelihood, most people would say they would like to come or would try to come to the wedding so they probably won't say no now.

I agree with Christine. Otherwise, it's basically an invite.

I agree. We only sent a few STD to family and close friends. We need some from our guest to say no, so we did not send them to everyone. But definetly if they get a STD, they should be invited to wedding (same thing goes for e-party)

I agree - I wouldn't place that wording on a STD. I would only send the STD to people who are definitely invited. If they can't make it, they'll let you know. It usually comes up in coversation.
