About to get engaged but want to know about a mounting fee.

Original post by CJ831

Hi!
I just went shopping for my engagement ring with my boyfriend at Zales this past weekend. Picked out a beautiful ring/band set and then picked out a stone. Didn't find a loose one I liked so we picked one out of a ring. He noticed a mounting fee of $800 on his receipt. It seems expensive and so I wonder if he was ripped off or is that usual? I know that it takes work to take out the diamond from one ring and then mount it on another but never knew how much they charge. Seems expensive.
Please let me know if you have any knowledge on this.
Thanks!

Okay, I've got an answer. The mounting was the charge for the ring and the band. They separated the price of the diamond from the ring and band. So everything is clear now.
It looked like it was good quality so I hope it's worth the price. The diamond is .73 karat, color E, SI2 and I forget the rest of the grading. The diamond cost $3,400 so I think that's where we got ripped off. Guess we should've shopped around a little more.

Thanks for all your input!

what!?!?! they charged you that much just for that grade diamond? isn't there a way that you could cancel the order or something? it seems like you guys are getting taken! why not check out an actual jeweler instead?
