? about what to wear tonight

We are going to be with a group of people at Cite, a restaurant on 52nd St. tonight. When I've gone there in the past, I usually wore black dress pants and a nice sweater. Tonight, the men are wearing jackets (though not necessarily ties) and I don't know what the women are wearing. DH wants me to wear a plum-colored cocktail dress with spaghetti straps. Would that be too dressy for a nice Manhattan restaurant on New Year's Eve? I would wear my simple black cocktail dress, but it's not fitting too well these days. The plum dress is more comfortable, but too dressy? The only shoes I have to wear with them is a pair of black silk heels. I would also wear sheer black stockings. I only know one person other than DH who will be there tonight and he is a guy who probably cannot help me in this situation.
