Ack!! I'm having such a tough time picking a BM dress!!

Original post by Suzq99

Hi everybody, I've been a silent member of the message boards for quite a while and they have been immensely helpful throughout the wedding planning process. Thanks to everybody!

Anyway, I'm posting today because I am feeling an increasing amount of anxiety about picking a BM dress and I feel like I just need to rant about it.

My wedding is on June 6th so I feel like I need to pick a dress, like...yesterday... I just graduated with a teaching degree so I've spent the last three months focusing on student teaching so I've just started looking at dresses now. One of my issues is that I don't really know anybody that can try on the sample dresses; they are either way too tiny and thus not an accurate representation, or they are, you know... a normal weight, so they don't fit into the samples I'd really like to see the dresses on normal people before picking one though. I've tried doing searches online but I haven't gotten a lot of pics where you can actually see the dresses. Any suggestions?

Also, I feel like I'm never going to find one that would look good on most, and that I actually like and would want to see in my pictures forever. I love the roughing (don't know if that's spelled right) like in Bill Levkoff 555 because it seems like it would be really flattering. However, that dress seems a little plain for me, especially since my dress has a lot of bead work on it. I would love to see some beading (not too much though) to accent the dress. I can't find one that I like though. Grr... so frustrating!!! Anyway, I just needed to rant!! If anybody has suggestions...is in the same boat...etc...I would love to know I'm not alone in my anxiety and frustration in finding the right BM dress!

Re: Ack!! I'm having such a tough time picking a BM dress!!

My BMs and I actually started at David's and found a few dresses that we all liked. It was great because they did have all different sizes and colors But....(and you had to know that it was coming ) not only are my girls all different sizes, two of them are very tall so they will need a dress that comes in extra length which David's does not do in the dresses I liked . I almost feel like at this point, I'm being too picky... The good news however is that I have dropped the whole beading *requirement* although it would be nice... And as such I have found three maybes. (I'll attach the pics)

Maybe I could get your opinion on my maybes...

My favorite is the tanish one [Bill Levkoff #919] because of the detail on the back. The problem with that one is that it's a bit expensive...$200ish plus extra length, extra sizes and alterations

Then there is the cinnamon one [Bill Levkoff #831] ($150ish++) which has the beading but I'm not sure about the whole flower/leaf design...it might be a bit much

The teal one [Alfred Angelo 6493] ($130ish++) is pretty, it's simple and I like the sweetheart neckline, and the color choices. I just feel like it's a little too simple. The tan one is so much more elegant.

What do you guys think?

I'm still going to a few more places again on Wed. With my ONE friend who will actually kind of fit into most of the dresses. Hopefully by Thurs. I will have picked a dress!! Thanks again for all of your help!

My girls tried on the low back one and it looked great on all of them although one didn't like exposing that much of her back even though she looked amazing in everything.
It is a beautiful dress.

what about having them in the same style dress but different silhouettes? this way each girl can pick the style that is most flattering for her but they all still match

Re: Ack!! I'm having such a tough time picking a BM dress!!

i looked online & in catalogues but found the dresses to be very different in person & really just hard to get a sense for...so myself, my mom, my moh & one other bm went to a bridal salon that we knew had a huge selection of BM dresses(bridal suite in centereach...we actually ordered the dresses through a different salon, but looked here because they have a TON of samples to try on & a huge selection of price range/designers)...anyways, we actually went and tried on a TON..this helped a lot, and we found our dress not to mention it was fun too i will say, the less people u bring the easier..i was NOT having 8 different girls opinions! lol. we found the dress & then i brought each girl back to try it on just to make sure they were comfortable in it. hth!

ps: we used Bill Levkoff..his dresses are great. Nice quality & doesn't totally break the bank... also - don't worry about the girls size(ie'they're to tiny'...) if u go to a bridal salon they will clamp back the dress & give an accurate idea. good luck!

I think everyone can sympathize with you!!! I have the no strapless request...and boy is that hard to find!! I have been searching online because my bridesmaids are out of state as well. It's been working out ok. They are going to look in a store by them to see what they think and let me know what they think. If you are around the same size as the girls you can always try them on to see what they look like. I asked the people in the salon that I found my dress and they gave some really good ideas on what would compliment my wedding dress!

Good luck!

You are not alone! I have 3 bms- and only one lives here. I wanted them to have different dresses, but same color and material. This was harder than I thought! Eventually, I took my one local BM on two long shopping days in the city. We had the most luck at Designer Loft (pricey but very helpful with ideas), Here comes the bridesmaid, and RK Bridal. She found a dress she liked and I found a color I liked ( a deep purple) in the Belsoie brand. I looked online and realized that there were lots of Belsoie tiffany chiffon dresses and that most would go well with my dress. So I baiscally gave my other two bms a few suggestsion, but told them that any Belsoie tiffany chiffon dress was fine with me. They went to try on and found ones they liked. Then I ordered from RK Bridal no frills. I just did this last week and my wedding is just a few weeks before yours.

Hope this helps!

i'm having a hard time too. three of my gals are out of state. i choose a dress back in ths spring only to find that it got discontinued nov. 1st.
it was a simple satin A-line gown. i've found others that are similar, but now my MOH doesn't want a satin gown, and the others aren't crazy about the chiffon like she likes.
I'm worried about her DD boobs popping out the top of the dress as well as two other BM who are D- which is why i wanted a dress that goes straight across instead of a scoop/sweetheart neckline.
Needlesss to say i have a list goin of dresses i like and i'm at the point where i'm gonna say 'this is it! If you don't like it too bad!!'
I don't want to be bridezilla either. i just want it all to be nice.

Re: Ack!! I'm having such a tough time picking a BM dress!!

I just had the same problem. I am getting married in May and just ordered my BM dresses today. I did Bill Levkoff style #966. I had my sister who is a 0 and a bridesmaid who is a 20 and both tried on the dress and loved it. It's strapless but comes with spaghetti straps or a jacket they can add.

You can also choose a color and let the girls pick the dresses (same designer and fabric though so the shades are the same). But make sure the dresses are ordered at once so the dye lot is the same. That's only if you're ok with everyone in a different dress. It would look pretty though if they are all different sizes. I contemplated doing that with mine, but nobody could agree on a color. So the dresses are black!!

Hope that helps!

to be honest i think looking online sux! the dresses look great pretty but there are dresses that when you see in person are crappy and look cheap and then others that stand out. my suggestion is to go look try on lots and lots on like 2 girls that are different shapes and take it from there...half of the ones i found online were not all they were cracked up to be! rk bridal in manhattan is a great place to try on a ton of different designers...spend a day there

Re: Ack!! I'm having such a tough time picking a BM dress!!

I went with my girls to Bridal Reflections in Massapequa on Saturday. The first floor is all tea length dresses and the basement is all floor length dresses. They have a HUGE selection. I went with 3 of my girls and told them to pick whatever they wanted to try on. They wound up agreeing on 2 and then I picked which one they are going to wear.

I liked letting them pick what they like because they are the ones that are going to wear it. I don't think it's necessary to look online because all stores carry different styles. Just go to a place with a huge selection and try as many things on as possible.
