Acne

I have a question for those of you who have experienced bad breakouts. My chin has been breaking out really bad lately.
What products prescription or non-prescription have you used that have worked really well.

TIA

Re: Acne

The neutrogena acne system is working SO well for me. I've been using it for 2 weeks and I've literally tried everything else under the sun.
It's a package of 3 products (Face wash, night cream and day lotion.)
If you don't normally break out though, definitely just try something gentle first.

Re: Acne

I've had problems with moderate acne since I was 21. I'm currently on Klaron and Duac Gel. My skin has been perfect ever since I've been on this regime with my derm. Not even a breakout when I get my period. I would go see a dermatologist especially if the pimples are cystic (hard, big and under the skin) beacuse this can cause bad scaring over time. Hope that wasn't TMI and helps a bit

Re: Acne

i've been told that this is the best you can do:

-go buy a blackhead remover and/or a white head remover (depending on what you have, make sure you get the right one). they sell these at places like Sally's

-wash your face with a good face wash

-steam your face open with hot water - not boiling! just hot tap water in your sink should work

-use the removers to remove the blackheads/whiteheads. they should come out really easily. if they don't, steam your face for a little while longer.

-when you're done 'seal' your pores with a good sea mud mask.

-repeat as necessary

i haven't done this really yet as i'm too lazy but i've heard it really the best for getting rid of pre existing blemishes and reducing the size of your pores. i'm gonna be trying this before the wedding though! =0)

I don't have any acne issues but my friend swares by proactiv!!

Re: Acne

proactiv RUINED my skin. i had a few little breakouts (nothing awful) and it made it 10x worse - i had to go to the Derm to clear it up.

Re: Acne

I got a medical facial the other day and she said the pro-activ is good product to use and once a week do

Part Aztec Clay (which I got at whole foods)
Part Apple Cider Vinegar

Make a mask and leave it on for 5-10 minutes, she said it's GREAT to do once a week. When I went and bought it actually says 'the worlds greatest facial'

FH is a pharm rep and used to work with derms. He says Duac (presc) works really really well and use cetaphil face cleanser. OTC stuff works, but probably not as well as you might like.

Re: Acne

I've tried pretty much everything out there - even prescription stuff. And NOTHING worked for me. And if it did work, I couldn't use it for very long because it irritated my skin.

For the last week, my skin has looked WAY better than usual. Here's what I've done: I've stopped washing my face.

FH suggested that maybe half of my problem is that all of these products are just beating up my skin. So, I scrub with my fingers and warm water twice a day, and I use a light toner in the evenings (I use something from the Body Shop... I forget what it's called) and then once a week, I use a deep cleansing mask/exfoliating treatment.

So, that helped a bit. But still, nothing great. Then, for other reasons, this week I started trying really hard to drink 6-8 glasses of water a day. I started that on Monday, I guess. Now, a week later, my skin is almost COMPLETELY clear. And it feels SOOOO much nicer - it's not all dried out and irritated. It's so soft and nice.

So, my point - before you go crazy spending money on all of this fancy stuff, try something simple first, like making sure you're eating well and getting enough water to drink. I've definitely proven to myself that what you put IN your body is way more important than what you put ON your body!

Re: Acne

I had lots of little tiny under-the-skin pimples all over my forehead (I don't have bangs - why I had them is a mystery). And some acne on my cheeks. I went on Accutane - 20mg/day and they cleared up for me. It was like a washboard on my forehead now it's so smooth!!!! And my cheeks are like babies bottoms.

The only side-effects I had was dry lips (no cracking/bleeding) and I get dry patches on my arms. It is worth it for me b/c my skin has never looked/felt better.

Re: Acne

I swear by proactive! you can order it through the mail and they will give you a face wash, a toner and a lotion. I only use the face wash once a day. I use the toner as a make-up remover and I use the lotion as my morning moisterizer. I used to break out really bad on my far head and my chin and now I rarely get a blemish!

They have a money back guarentee so if you're not happy they'll give you a full refund!

Re: Acne

I would go to a dermatologist if i were you...especially if your insurance covers it, it might end up being less expensive than over the counter. If no over the counter creams/face washes help then they might be able to give you a prescription for an oral antibiotic(there are different strengths). I have heard that young women respond well to a combo of antibiotic and a facial cream. Just a thought...

also...if your insurance covers it, they may even be able to give you cortisone shots to reduce inflammation.

I second this, which reminds me to buy more. Pro Active is good as well, but had a higher benzyol peroxide count.

Read the labels first, the higher the counts on anything the more drier your skin can get.

Same here and I went on Accutane (very nasty last resort drug!) now I just got a few pimples every now and then!
