I have a question regarding addressing outer envelpes. If my FH and I want to invite someone to bring a guest, can we write 'Ms. ---- & guest' on the outer envelope, or should it be written on the inner envelope?

Re: addressing envelopes
Technically on the inner envelope
You address the outer envelop to the person you are inviting with their address
On the inner envelope you write
Mrs. Jane Doe & Guest
or if children are invited it goes on the inside envelope as well
the only time you put both names on the outer envelope is if two people live together.
outer envelope...nothing should be written on the inner envelope
sorry but this is incorrect. the outer gets the name of the main person invited... Ms. Jane Doe
inner get her and guest
Ms. Doe and Guest

I know this is a dumb question but I haven't started the invite process yet....what does everyone mean by outer and inner envelope? I thought there was usually just an outer envelope and inside is the invitation, direction card and a reply card addressed to the bride and groom?? What am I missing? Thanks!

Re: addressing envelopes
there is an outer envelope that gets addressed and then another envelope that names the people who are invited (with guest, children, etc) and everything is put into that envelope.
You don't have to have an inner envelope

Re: addressing envelopes
that is nice. I was just really insulted we went to a wedding last sat night and I was listed as guest and this was by FH's family.
They knew we were engaged and living together for over 3 years you think they could have found out my name.

Re: addressing envelopes
I dont think '& Guest' is bad but that's terrible when you are engaged! I honestly believed that you were supposed to put that all on the outer envelope and that's how I've always gotten them. Just goes to show that there is no one set way. My invitation did not come with an inner envelope so I had no choice anyway but to put it on the outside.
