Ok so with all the crazy wedding planning going on, my mom & I, FH & FMIL got together and handwrote the adresses on the wedding invitations. FMIL wrote her family, my Mom our side of family & I did friends.......
So my sisters (BM) later tell me this was against wedding 'etiqutte' and I should've done it (like it was a great sin). I couldn't see giving a calligrapher money to write something that would go in the garbage. My FH & I want a house in the near future so I thought I was being smart in choosing what was important to spend on & not so important....
Now my sis wants me to talk with one of her friends about 'wedding etiquette' b/c she thinks I need some help. Meanwhile I just need people to be a gentler with their advice or just not give it , if not asked !!!!!
Am I crazy??? You gals can be honest, I appreciate it....
Almost 1 month to go !!

Re: Addressing invitations???
I've read that there is nothing wrong with handwriting the addresses on your invitations.
I think if you used printed labels that would be bad etiquette; but personally writing the addresses yourself is not wrong. But that's just my opinion. I'm with you on getting a calligrapher to address the invites.

Re: Addressing invitations???
I think it depends on how it is handwritten. There is a big difference between writing it with a blue bic pen and writing it with a black felt pen. script v. print etc. i agree with you that it ends up in the garbage however it is the very first thing they see regarding your wedding day

Re: Addressing invitations???
definitely nothing wrong with doing that.. having someone write it for you at least doubles the amt you spend on invites!!

Re: Addressing invitations???
I personally really don't see what the big issue is with handwriting the addresses on invitations. I don't think you did anything wrong!

There is NOTHING wrong with handwriting the invitations.
The kind of etiquette you need to remember is how to address an envelope with one doctor in the household.
Beside the fact that you can do ANYTHING you want, its not even in the 'etiquette: book that this must be done.
I dont know why its so easy for us to be talked to the way we are, but so HARD to stick up for ourselves!!!
Sister/mother/coworker/BM/lady on the street:
'WOW, you look fat. Will you fit into your dress?'
Us/Bride: 'um.....um...'
I do this too!!!! We all need to start telling people to shut thier pie holes :)
But seriously im learning to tell people that as much as I appreciate their advice I dont really need it.

Re: Addressing invitations???
Handwriting the invitations is totally fine. It's not against etiquette. Almost no one will notice the writing on the front of the invite at all.
I had wanted to do labels and the place I got my invitations told me that they'd rather I chicken scratch them on than use labels. I ended up printing them on my home printer directly on the envelopes. No one cared, not even my dad who notices those sorts of things usually.
I think it's nice you had a whole team to help address the invites!

Re: Addressing invitations???
my mom hand addressed my invitations... she used a calligraphy pen and has nice script so i trusted her to do a great job... and she did! i couldnt care less if people commented on it or thought it wasnt 'etiquette'... tell her to fork over the dough to have them done over... then she what she says

I don't see anything wrong with this. I will probably write mine out myself... I like my handwriting and I can't see paying someone $2-$3 per envelope to write them out for me. No one is going to care about the envelope 5 seconds after they tear it open.

Seriously! Its all about personal preference and how you choose to spend your money. Do not second guess your actions. You didn't do anything wrong

Re: Addressing invitations???
question, why is it 'so bad' to use the clear labels?

Re: Addressing invitations???
I think its fine. There are so many things we have to spend money on for our weddings and most the time people do not even notice all the small details, so if you wanted to save money and hand write them yourself, good for you :)

Re: Addressing invitations???
I am recruiting a BM to help me write the addreses the weekend. Honestly, I don't even care if it's not what etiquette says to do? I'm listening to logic instead.
I'm using a stamp that my parents have for their return address for the return address on the invite and the address on the rsvp envelope, and then handwriting the guest's addresses.
I'm going to try my hardest NOT to spend much more money on this wedding.

Wow I can't believe someone would say something like that to you. You definitely made a wise choice on what to skimp and spend on.

I dont think its bad either. It saves time and energy. I am debating printing or having a friend of mine with good hand writing address my envelopes. There is no need to have to pay more money on something as simple as addressing envelopes.

clear labels never go on entirely clear... you usually end up seeing the edges of the label... i personally, think it looks tacky bc i feel like if just a little more effort was used, it would look entirely better if it was actually printed on the envelopes... i guess it just looks like little effort was put into it... and people generally think of wedding invites as something 'classy'... JMO, but then again my envelopes are made of brown kraft paper lol... mine dont look like wedding invites at all... and i still didnt want the label look...
